Does anyone out there have pet insurance for thier bun?  I have it for my dog but I’ve been debating on getting it for Arthur.  Does anyone know what the average cost is? I know it varies from company to company but a general idea would be nice as you can’t get a quote online (and I really don’t feel like dealing with calling and getting a quote with a salesperson at this time since I’m not quite ready to buy).  I know with what company I am going to go with, just a general price idea would be nice and how useful it has or hasn’t been.

        Thanks a ton

I only know of VPI offering it for buns.

Personally I’m against pet insurance because I think you will generally spend less money over time if you just save up an emergency fund. Of course, it can be great if your pet has some serious medical issues, but the majority of vet care we pay for is regular visits and other things that aren’t covered anyway.

I have VPI and I find the payments to be low enough that it’s worth it to me. An unexpected problem can hit you at a bad time, and if you find you tend to dip into your savings for other things, or if the vet bill is so much higher than you expected, at least you have the insurance to back you up.

I have it for my dog and although we haven’t had to use it for emergencies I used it to cover his neuter and well care checkups. I thought the reimbursement was great. I did lower it to only emergency coverage. I think for 12.00 a month that’s reasonable. Pluse you get 80% back if something does happen. In an ideal world I would have the savings for emergencies but I don’t, so it usually goes on a credit card then gets paid off with the reimbursement. Plus we are trying to save up for a house so I would hate to have to dig into that.

I just didn’t know if anyone had to use “bunny insurance” before and if they found it to be good or not worth it. The dog insurance has been great so far.

I have found that my buns haven’t needed it, its easier for me to just put money away each month. That way its available when I need it, and I don’t have to spend it if it isn’t needed, whereas the insurance you have to pay even if it isn’t used. And with 4 buns, the payments would add up.

My fiance and I considered it for Link – and decided against it. We will never do so again – we paid $1000 in vet bills this summer.

I use VPI and for me it was a good decision because it’s so easy for me to dip into my savings during emergencies for human issues. But also, I have had situations where I had savings for the vet and it was wiped out with an illness from one of our bunny illnesses. I definitely have never paid out more than I got back — between teeth issues, gi stasis, e.cuniculi, abscesses, bladder stones, cancer — I have forked out thousands of dollars, and to get a decent percentage back was extremely helpful.

I am sure there are many times though that a decent untouched savings account can work well for other situations.
