I adopted Komoko a few weeks ago. I think he is more or less settled in to the new environment. I was letting him out to walk around while I clean the litterbox. I think he did a few binkies too. When he went back into the cage after I replaced the litterbox back, I closed the cage door. After a while, he started to jump around his cage either violently. I am not sure if he’s excited or mad at me for not letting him play more. Any advice?

I am still new to this as the only pets I had in the past are hamsters and terrapins.

my gut instinct is that he’s trying to play, but cant because he’s in a small space. so he’s probably frustrated, hence the violent jumping.

Hmm… I will have to allow him more time roaming my balcony then.

It sounds like he’s sort of binkying and protesting. Is your balcony enclosed? Bunnies can squeeze through a very, very small opening.

My bun gets so mad at me when we close her up in her cage for the night, yours was probably just protesting at not being finished with his playtime

Yes, my balcony is enclosed but I can’t let him roam around the balcony at night as he seems to like chewing on my mother’s shoes. Looks like I should let him have a bit more of playtime. How long should I let him roam around?

apparently bunnies should be exercised for about 3 hours a day. Mine are out of the hutch for about 12 hours a day, but I have heard that the standard is 3 hours?

At first, Otto would only binky in his cage because that’s where he felt the safest. It looked like he was throwing himself around, but really he was just trying to binky in a small space. I think your bunny is just trying to play, but it looks awkward because he’s in his cage.

ETA: Otto does get angry when we put him away at night, but he usually shows this by flicking his feet at us and hiding in his cage. It looks very different from the “cage binkies”.

Thump gets mad at me when he isn’t ready to be locked up and will take a jar top and clank it against his cage or he will try and dig his way out which is really funny to me. This morning I narrated for Thump it went something like : He was digging at his cage bottom, right by the door ” I am going to bust out of this joint while mom is sleeping, shell never know! Ut ohhh i think i was digging to loud and woke her up, oh well I think I am almost there I better dig faster. OH NO she is getting out of bed I had better just freeze like I wasn’t doing a thing.” Then i open the cage door ” Rats mom I almost had it why you always gotta baby me!”

Sounds like he got excited with his time out and had energy left over to spare and was probably trying to finish playing and binkying in his pen. Also sometimes bunnies will toss stuff around, dig and thump in their pen or cage when they are agitated. But if he was just running and binkying in his cage that would be more like playing.

IF you find that you would like to give him more time out, but are limited with time, I suggest getting an xpen – that way at least their is more running room on days that exercise has to be limited.
