We have a  two year old Velvet rabbit mix. We adopted her a little over a week ago, and she has been doing great we have her set up next to our current bun, Mochi. She has been behaving great almost cuddly with my husband and I so far, but when I was making dinner tonight she started thumping, so I put Mochi in his cage and let her out and as soon as I let her out she ran and hid behind the couch. We were able to bait her back in her cage and with food but she is still thumping and seems fearful. I don’t know what could have caused this random and fearful behavior. She is worrying me cause she is so stressed that her undercoat is coming up.

Were you cooking meat or were there sizzling sounds or smells from making food? Some rabbits get terrified by cooked meat smells or sizziling sounds.

I’d second Wick and say it was the cooking that triggered her reaction.

Sounds that we are so used to like the clanking of a pot, washing cutlery, opening/closing of a fridge door, slightest clash of two ceramic plates etc will alert the rabbit, and if it’s one more prone to stress then it would probably have a bigger reaction. Especially since if it’s a new sound to her.

I was cooking bacon, but I have cooked hamburger before and she didn’t have a problem with it and she seems to have calmed down now, even laying down….

I find that sometimes bunnies are indeed quite random – they can be fine with one thing today but be scared of the same thing tomorrow. So it could either be that, or something else startled her while you were busy cooking. Their ears are extra sensitive so she might have caught a different sound that you didn’t manage to.

We cook quite often too (almost every other day) and my bunny room is quite near to the kitchen. Most of the time Kurotta does get startled by the cooking but he soon gets used to it, although he would still be on alert mode for the first few minutes every single time we cook. If your bunny seems okay now, then it was probably just a temporary scare and wouldn’t harm her
