hello, everybody, my question is

what size pen should I have if I get 2 adult medium-sized rabbits

and what’s the cheapest place to get them

If you get two rabbits that are not bonded, you will want to get two xpens, which can be combined in the future. Each rabbit needs about 12 sq feet of space. The xpen I have is HERE. My bun is free-roam, the xpen is just his “home base” with his litter box and food and water. I have the 30-inch height, but my bun can escape by jumping on the hood of his litter box, so if you want your rabbits to stay inside, I would go for a teller height, but it’s all up to personal preference.

A cage like you normally see at a pet store is way too small for one rabbit, let alone two. They are very playful and active. They like to zoom around and jump straight up in the air, stretch out, etc. It’s also very important for then to run around because they excrete calcium through their urine (humans and dogs poop excess calcium so this is very different). So the way a bunny bladder is shaped, the calcium will just sit and build up in the bottom of their bladder unless they have enough space to really run and jump and play. That will shake it up so they can pee it out. So check with your parents and see what is the largest space you can do and check back and people here would be happy to help you figure out if it’s large enough for them.

As big as you can fit 🙂 the side linked above would be fine if they’re allowed to free roam, otherwise it would be really small.

I’m not sure about retailers in Australia, but if you search online usually in the US you can get decent x-pens for about $30-40. If you look for the kind meant for dogs they are more sturdy. Between 30-36″ tall is usually good for most bunnies, as long as you’re aware of possible escape routes, as Louie mentioned! Also consider how big your dogs are and make sure they can’t get to the bunnies either.

An alternative to an x-pen is to use storage cube grids (AKA “neat idea cubes”) to build a “condo”, or you can even use them to build a pen that fits the exact size you want. You can use cable ties to attach them together. These also come in handy for bunny proofing or blocking off specific areas you don’t want the bunnies to go.

I like bunny “condos” over pens because they let you build “up” so the bunnies get more space without taking up so much floor space (I’m in a small apartment). Plus I love waking up in the morning and having the buns be at eye level on the top floor of their condo. 🙂  A little more complicated to build though!
