Ex Pen Addition

I wanted to share this in case anyone else is having a similar challenge with their rabbit’s housing.  My bunny was living in an ex pen, I had a little extra space and wanted to give him more room–but I did not have enough space for 2 ex pens connected.  Someone on here gave me the idea of making a pen out of NIC Cubes, so I actually kept the ex pen and combined it with the cube idea by using them as an add-on to make his area bigger.  It worked out really well and even though the cubes are a few inches higher than my ex pen, it really doesn’t matter since I have the higher part up against the wall.  I did not use cable ties as I am worried he will chew them, also for this set up it seems sturdy enough without them.  I know it is different if you’re making an actual condo or maybe even if you are using all cubes.  *If anyone thinks I still need to use the cable ties, please let me know because I have never used these cubes before.  But so far I really like the nic cubes a lot for rabbit housing, simply for the fact of how customize-able it is.

This setup looks really well put together & is a lovely amount of space for your lucky bun!! I just wanted to tell you that! This is also good inspiration like you said for others looking to use ex-pens as housing. I also have an ex pen for both of my rabbits – and I’m a firm believer that they are great habitats, as they can easily be changed or moved around! Props to you for combining to give more space, the NIC grids attached were a great idea!!

Thank you!! Yes the ex pens are great for space and like you said very adaptable. What type of flooring do you use in yours? I’d like to use vinyl/linoleum flooring for cleaning purposes but I think the ex pen would slide around too much so I just use fleece tarps. My bun likes to bite the bars a lot so that makes it more challenging to stay in place.

I really like your set up!! It’s extremly nice! I wish I could do the low fencing u have but sadly my bunnies r escapees. And one of them can already jump over the xpen that I have. (And the xpen I have was made for golden retrievers) Really like the set up and that seems like one happy bunny

Love the set up! You can always use zip-ties and cut off the excess. I will make it extra sturdy incase your bunny wants to tug on it and not have it crashing to the ground haha.

Your set up is incredible! You did a lovely job decorating too – super cute fleece on the floor. If you’re worried about your bun chewing the zip ties, theres honestly more of a chance of him chewing the connectors that came with the grids rather than the zip ties. Just make sure to trim the ends off the zip ties if you decide to use them! Once again incredible job sizing up his cage; he sure thanks you for that!

Absolutely love your set up! Great decorating, and great idea to use the NIC grids as well. I might be doing the same thing as I just made the boys’ xpen larger using an additional xpen, but like you mentioned, I too don’t have the room right now to use the full size of both.
Is that the chew toy/digging platform from small pet select? How does your bun like it? I want to get my boys something like that, but I’m having a hard time deciding between something like this, or the rabbit activity zone toy.

Love the set up! Your pen looks so clean and pretty and decorated. Whereas as in my house, as soon as I clean Boo’s shed, she makes sure that it looks like a tornado had hit it in 10 minutes?

Oooh, I almost did this! I moved our old X-pen outside instead, but I love how innovative you got with it! Your space is absolutely gorgeous though and I’m envying that giant cardboard tunnel, what a pampered bunny!

As someone with a full NIC cube set up, I’ve learned the little daredevils will chew your cable ties, but I just put them near the corners and cut off any excess so they don’t bother too much with it. It probably helps that my rabbits like to join in on the zip tying process, and have decided after nibbles that they do not like the texture. If it becomes a problem for you, I would put a hanging toy near the cable ties, just to distract it towards chewing something else. Of course, you don’t have to use cable ties if it’s firm, but if you’re paranoid like me, it does help with security!
