So I’ve been working on the knotty butt w/ a little at a time.  I have already cleaned his glands twice since I got him (about 3 weeks).  However, this bunny STINKS all the time.  He has a pen next to Jessica and when you come in the room you can smell him from the doorway.  It doesn’t smell like poop or pee (dirty litterbox), he smells like stinky scent glands all the time.  I check his bottom daily for poop trapped in the knotty butt, but boy, he STINKS!  Any suggestions?  It really is him that stinks and not his pen.  You can tell when you pick him up.  He is literally a STINKER!

          ew lol

Are you definitely hitting the right spot with his glands? If they’re clean, then it shouldn’t be that…

Is he eating his cecals normally?

Are you sure he is neutered?

SLS mentions he is not neutered yet, in the other thread about Ewan. So yeah, that’s probably a major contributor to the smell.

You said he was sitting in a dirty cage for a long time before you got him. Could his fur be holding this odor. Or could he have a bacterial infection of the skin? If he can handle it, maybe give him a one time actual bath?

Is it the oniony-garlic sort of smell or more the really pungent scent gland smell? What are the insides of his ears like? There can be a build up of smelly gunk there sometimes.

I would say him not being neutered is probably the biggest culprit.

Even a few months after Sammy was neutered, he still had a week-long episode where he emanated a wonderful skunky smell. His litter box was clean, his butt was perfectly clean, he never smelled before or since, but he just had a stinky week. I think he was marking…. Neutering should definitely at least help though.

It might be worth it to take him to the vet for a “professional” cleaning (scent glands and surrounding area) and while you’re there make an appointment for his neuter. By seeing him in person they may be willing to make it sooner once they know if he’s ready and grown enough. It is definitely going to help.

He’s got the garlicky/onion smell.  That’s so funny how it was described b/c I had recently cooked w/ garlic and thought I hadn’t gotten the smell off of me!

I’m getting the glands, they were chock full of yucky brown ick.  I needed to use some additional mineral oil too.  I washed his bottom pretty well this weekend, but it is still very knotty and really needs to be reviewed and taken care of by the vet.  We just moved and have about $0.  That’s actual, not an exaggeration.  I wasn’t able to start work until 2 weeks after I originally thought I would.  DH reached his unemployment limit at xmas, so we are desperately waiting for our next check.  I only get pd once/mos & his new job will pay him 2/18.  So Ewan is on our priority radar.

Our other unneutered boys did not stink this much!  I guess it’s his “sexiness,” but it is awful.  He’s started w/ the humping on Jessica, so it is definately time for the snip.  She luckily is able to find refuge in the livingroom, he hasn’t learned how to cross onto hardwood floors yet.  I’ll keep you all posted…..still have to get picks up…soooooo cute!
