Noticing the last few days both the boys’ poos are about half their normal size. Still lots of poos, just smaller. Within the last week I switched from regular Timothy hay to Premium SweetGrass Timothy hay which is a lot leafier, greener and softer than the normal Timothy. I don’t usually buy it because it’s got a lot of brown stuff in it and it costs more but they love it and my pet store was out of the normal Timothy so I had to change for now.

Could the poo size change be caused by the fact that the hay is softer, maybe easier to digest than the coarser stick pieces of the normal hay? I’ve fed the sweetgrass occasionnaly before but never noticed a difference.

Olivia’s poos seem to be fine. No one is shedding and eating well.

yes sometimes a change in menu will cause a  change in their output.   Sometimes temporary sometimes not til you change the food again.

I have had that happen with pellets.  When I went back to the usual pellets a month and a half later when it ran out the poos returned to normal.

I haven’t noticed a change in my bunnies poos when I switch hays EXCEPT whey they are fed Oat. They have much bigger dryer poos with Oat. Oat is leafy, yet definitely more firm (more like a second cut texture mixed in with wider softer pieces). So types of hay can definitely change the size of bulk that is in the poo changing the size of poo. But anytime a poo gets smaller, you want to just watch. If they get really small, dark and harder, then something different is up.

If you do have a bunny that has more common digestive problems, then you want to stick with the highest fiber (which is going to be more stemmy and course – OR you can maybe mix it together with their leafier favorite).  But of course, if the store is out, it’s better to have a new kind of hay, then no hay at all.
