Esther: Stasis or pysch issues

 Hi everyone,

So this week i have spent close to $600 at the vet for Esther for her lack of appetite. She has had x-rays and blood work done. The blood work came back fine and the x-ray found nothing. The only thing they saw is that she has a empty stomach. She was kept over night and given fluids and force feeding.  She’s on reglan 3 times a day plus 3 teaspoonful of critical care/ baby food mix. Plus syringes of warm waters (i now have a water bottle and bowl out for her). She still doesn’t seem to have a great appetite. 

My question is is she going through stasis or is it some pysch issue? I’ve noticed she’s eaten the veggie puffs and nibble on her pellets in the morning after having the night to herself. Plus eaten some of her parlsey leaves. Am i stressing her out too much which is causing this? She fine enough to learn the new trick of hoping on my sholder and onto my back to get away from the force feeding. Yet she doesn’t seem to be very active (well neither are the other three, but they’re all pigs). I rearranged her pen this moring and she was curious about it when i was moving things….but now……

I have no idea what to do. I’m supposed to bring her in tomorrow if she doesn’t start eating “normally” again, but i don’t even know what is normal for her anymore. Is it the cold or being alone?  SO VERY FRUSTERATED right now. I basically gave my whole pay check to them last week and if i bring her in they would keep her a day or two. Would it be more harm than good? Does she have stasis?

Well, if she’s eating she’s not in stasis. Stasis is a condition not an actual illness.

Did the vet check her teeth?

Could definitely be teeth.

I am curious, what are veggie puffs?

Yep. Esther had too much “personality” for Dr. Brady to hold alone so Dr. Jeanne helped looked since she was there checking up on animals. Teeth looked fine.

My experience with teeth is that sometimes the vet needs to put them under anesthesia to see those molars all the way in the back and sometimes the tongue can hide the spurs…I would ask your vets about doing this.

Also ask about a payment plan with your vet as the bill escalates.

Sounds like focusing on the teeth is the next step. But you might also check around for another exotics vet in your area for a second opinion if you think they are missing the problem.

I talked to Dr. Brady this evening and asked about Esther’s teeth. She said they were a little over grown, but there were no indications of them bothering her, infection, or redness. Esther goes back into the vet tomorrow for a two day stay. I pick her up on thursday morning. They’re going to try her on a new medicine and give her round the clock feeding. I’m going to ask them to look at her teeth again to make sure. If this doesn’t work i’m going to ask Dr. Jeanne to give them a second opinion.

I was told i could make a payment plan if i wish. I might have too soon. I was told the cost should be about $80 for the two day stay, though i believe it’s probably going to be more. Depending on the cost i may pay half now and pay the rest later……

I’m hoping Esther gets better before Christmas….
