Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. So one gift I got is an essential oil diffuser. I was wondering if it would be safe to use it around my bunnies? Or should I use it when they are not in the room? If it is safe, are there any essential oils I should avoid because they may be toxic to rabbits?

Also I was wondering if burning candles would be safe as well! I always burned them in a different area of the house away from the bunnies because I wasn’t sure – just to be safe. Thank you all!

There was a thread on this about a year ago (another Christmas gift!), and I think the consensus was that they should be avoided… I remember someone was going to ask their vet but never posted the answer.

Many oils can build up in the rabbits body, the same way that the aromatic compounds from pine shavings can, and can cause problems if the rabbit ever has to go under anesthesia. I think Lavendar oil can affect the liver, if I remember correctly.

Here’s that old thread, which had a lot of replies: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/164918/Default.aspx

Hopefully some others will chime in here with any new info.

I think scented candles were less clear. My feeling is that if they are in a different part of the house it would be OK, but I wouldn’t do it in the same room.

I was reading something a couple weeks ago about this topic. The person was talking about dogs specifically, but others were commenting with reports and research for animals in general. I would advise you not to use any scented oils, candles, or air fresheners near animals as it can give them respiratory issues quite easily. Some companies actually give a warning not to use near pets. I think there are a few types of essential oils of a certain grade that are okay around pets, but I don’t remember the specifics.

Personally, I will continue to use them sporadically like I already do, but only in my bedroom area that is in the opposite end of my house from where my pets are located. I already use air purifiers in my home so I believe the risk is minimal for my pets.
