I have two young bunnies, Pandia and Devi, both of which at this point have figured out how to jump out of the dog pen they had been living in. Currently, I have them seperated due to the fact that neither are altered and I’ve been waiting for them to get big enough to do so (they are only about three months each). And they had started becoming quite aggressive with each other.

First only Pandia had figured out how to jump over my three foot dog pen, so when I seperated them, I bought her a large cage that has a second story to it, so she has more room to roam. But then I still allowed Devi to live in her cage/pen area. The other night I woke up and found Devi running around my room after she escaped. Since then I have kept her to her cage when I’m gone and not allowed her to have the extra pen space. But I really feel horrible with the lack of space this provides and the long hours I am at work three day s a week.

I guess what I’m getting at is two things. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it harder for her jump out of the pen without me having to go out and buy another one that’s taller? And next, does anyone have good ideas on how to make you’re on bunny condo? I’ve been researching it for awhile. If I can I want to keep both Pandia and Devi in the same condo area (seperated until they are post-surgery healthy), And I want it to be big enough that they can binky in there without hurting themselves.

        Any advice is helpful!

          Put a roof on it

Sometimes even just clipping a sheet on it will stop them from trying to jump out.

            Hi there

Well, sometimes rabbits are jump acrobats and will jump even 3 feet of height.

Here is the link from this site on ideas of housing, and also if you scroll down, you can see where you can get NIC grids (Neat Idea Cubes) and some links to how to build a NIC grid condo.

I built a 3 story one for my little girl last month, and it is 3×2. I don’t really have to worry about her jumping out of it because she is a little scared of heights (she becomes hesitant even from jumping off the couch), so you may have to build the condo higher depending on the bunnies jumping acrobats!

Definitely try clipping a simple sheet to the pen with binder clips or something like that. It might solve your problem really easily. How tall is the pen you are currently using?

Sometimes a top is enough of a visual deterrant but not always. I have a little 7wk old one who was climbing the grids to escape. It was pretty comical !

If you are looking into building a NIC grid condo (C&C condo) in future then you could buy some of the grids now and use them to make a pen top. I’ve used 7 grids before to make a panel of sorts. 6 to form a rectangle and one rotated 45 degrees (still laying flat) & overlayed in the centre. This one was ziptied to each of the 6. This stopped if from folding.
Or just use grids to extend the height of the pen.

How high is the pen? Anything shorter than a 36 inch isn’t very realistic for containing bunnies. That seems to be the magical height that they won’t jump, altho a few special, “flying” bunnies have been known to make that leap too… lol. A sheet or makeshift top should would to keep them in, but if you have a very short pen, you may still want to replace it eventually.

For the top of my cage and the different levels of floor used peg board, peg board already has holes in it which made so easy to attach to the nic grids.  The bottom floor I  used a1 inch thick piece of wood; which made the cage sturdy

Jerseygirl, Sammy would climb the sides of his cage at that age too but he outgrew it. He doesn’t climb anything like that anymore, so hopefully your bunny will move past that too and you won’t have to figure out a top for everything LOL I think Sammy could do it until he grew too heavy to have the strength to hold himself vertical like that.
