        Hello!

I am going to preventively treat my bunny for coccidiosis (I found out she has never been treated before by the breeder!) and I got a medication called “ESB 3 BIO”. The dosage on the packaging is: “2 grams on 1 liter of water” (it’s a powder). But Caramel drinks only about 250 – 500 ml daily (she doesn’t get any veggies/grass/fruit yet)… I know she should drink more, but I can’t force her, can I?  The packaging also says that if a rabbit drinks more than 1 l, I should give her clean water on the rest of the day. I don’t know, if I should give her 1 gram into her 500 ml drinky bottle (knowing, that she probably wouldn’t drink it all) or put the 2 grams into 2 ml syringe and spray it into her mouth…? I am afraid of poisining her…

Hi! I’ve never heard of a preventative treatment for coccidiosis. Sorry, I’m not familiar with the medication either. But I would wait to give her the medicine until you can get confirmation on the dosage.

As for the water, she might drink more if in addition to the water bottle you offer her a bowl too . Ceramic bowls work well since they’re heavier and less likely to get tossed around or flipped over by your bun.

How old is your bunny? You said this is preventative, so I’m assuming your bunny is not exhibiting symptoms?

She is about 5 months old, in here it is common for the breeder to treat the bunny before selling it, but she didn’t. You are supposed to do it after it stops drinking milk from it’s mommy and then in 6 weeks.

I’d give her 1 gram in a 500 ml bottle. If you cut back on fresh vegs, she’ll drink more. I’d not put two grams in a syringe and feed her because it says that the concentrated preparation is irritating, and bunny stomachs are very sensitive. t’d be far safer to give it with the drinking water.

But if she’s not displaying any symptoms, I’m not sure you should treat her. Coccidiosis as a rule affect very young newly-weaned bunnies with devastating effects. But your bun has survived well past that hazardous age without treatment. Does she have good, round poops? Good appetite?

(I read about the ESB 3 BIO here: http://www.bioveta.eu/products/veterinary-products/esb-3-bio-300-mg-g-powder-for-oral-solution.html)

That’s the problem – lately she’s having weirdly-shaped poops, that are pretty small and black. She is eating well though and doesn’t “look” sick (she is still pretty playful and stuff). My uncle (who used to have rabbits) advised me to preventively treat her with this, since the nearest vet is aprox. 1,5 hour by train away (I don’t want to stress her with such long travelling if not neccesary).
