I decided to pick up a forty pound bag of equine pine pellets from Tractor Supply. I’m pleased with the quality, but my issue is the smell. I’m worried that it could harm Rain, because I know they can’t have pine shavings as bedding due to the strong smell. I’ve read from a lot of sites that Pine pellets are perfectly safe, but I’m still not sure.

I think there are a couple of members here who use pine pellets for litter so it should be alright

Yes they are safe, they can have a quite a strong smell when you first open the bag but it goes away Pine pellets are safe because they are kiln dried and that process removes the harmful phenols which are the risk for causing I think liver damage (could be kidney, can’t remember).

Anyway, I’ve used them for years, and now use them in my cat’s litter boxes as well. I’ll never use anything else.

Thank you all for the help! It seems like she’s fine with them, although I had to sprinkle some hay dust over the top because it was a little hard for Rain to sit on. She’s used to soft Carefresh bedding. But I’m very pleased with how well it works as litter. I’m only concerned about the dust that forms at the edges. But since it doesn’t have the chemicals in it anymore, it’s still safe, right?

I use the same thing, horse stall pine pellets. I notice some bags do have a stronger smell than others, and some bags are more dusty, but it is much much less than straight pine shavings.

I do put a decent layer of hay over the top of them to make them softer to stand on.

Been using them for years, never going back!

I also use these. They do have a strong smell at first, but I’ve noticed that it neutralizes over time. I spread a little layer of hay on the bottom to protect her little feets
