I heard some use this at another rabbit site I belong to, and I wonder what Binkybunny knows about it being safe for buns and cats too.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to find a earth friendly disposable litter for my cats and my bunny that I can dump in the woods, flower beds (rabbit only of course) that is cost effective and this may be it?? Do y’all here at Binky know anything about this as a litter for rabbits and cats. I hate putting all the cat litter into the landfill, the rabbit poo goes into the gardens.  I think I could train my cats to use this if it is safe for a bunny.  MoSimba uses a box that has a wire cover so he’ s not  ‘in’ the litter, just over it, the cats use the outdoors mostly but  I have one priss pot who only does her biz inside.

        Thanks so much!

        Martha

I’m not really sure about this specific type of wood pellet — but i do know that Yesterday’s New’s is a earth-friendly litter, and I find that it eliminates odors better than wood shavings and is safe for both rabbits and cats.

If you buy Yesterday’s News in the cat size, it is about $13 here, and thats for 40lb bag. Its the same thing as the small animal one, I saw Yesterday’s news litter for rabbits the other day at petsmart for $10 for a measly 10lb bag. WHATEVER. its the same as the cat litter. Its made out of recycled newspaper and its biodegratable. I reccomend it. It is more expensive than wood shavings, but its recycled and it works well. Its less messy too!

I use Lignetics Wood Pellets.  It’s completely environmentally friendly and the whole thing can be thrown in the woods.  The rescue where I got my bun uses this and I’m very happy with it.  I NEVER smell pee but then I have to change it daily only because my bun pees so much!  I get a 40 lb. bag for $7.99 so it’s cheap!  Don’t know about using it for cats though.  I’m like you I hate throwing that horrendous cat litter in the garbage but I do and I’m not proud of it.

Oh and you can buy it at bigger hardware stores or lumber stores where they sell firelogs.

I don’t know if you have this product, I use it for mine it is called MiniHemp.

Hemp litter is used to cover floors of cages for pets
such as rabbits, guinea-pigs and birds. It is made from
the delicate woody core of fibre hemp. Mini-Hemp
provides a hygienic and comfortable pet habitat and
it is perfect for the cat box too.
Due to hemp wood’s natural spongelike quality, moisture
and odours are easily soaked up. Ammonia in
particular is bound and absorbed by hemp litter. Mini-
Hemp is user friendly and can stay put for longer periods
                than other pet litters.
Mini-Hemp comes in convenient packs of 12 and 48
                litres littering volume.

                After use Mini-Hemp is suitable
                for organic waste disposal and
after composting it can be used
                as a biological garden fertizer.

Oh my! I’m SO glad I asked, those are good options! no.. GREAT options.
I’m trying hard to go green as I can. So these are great things to try. I just have to find them.
The Yesterdays news is definately around here, but I’m leaning more to an earth friendly wood pellet if I can find it locally.

                  Thanks guys! I appreciate it

Lisa, lol! I don’t think they sell the minihemp in the US but I’ll look for it, they prob. think some fool would be
trying to smoke it, bhwahaha! When I click that link it says page cant be found.

I’m inspired now…when I’m through with this last cat litter, I’m buying only earth friendly, wood friendly from now
                    on.

Hopefully you can find the wood stove pellets or something similar. Just google it.  Let us know! You try them first with the cat and let me know what happens before I try it on my cat!  Ha Ha…

I have wanted to explore this option, but they just can’t be found in Chicago.

I use FelinePine – a pelleted litter with all the nasties baked out.  It’s flushable, compostable, and does a fabulous job on smells – I only change the box once a week!

I use Lonestar bedding and I bet its the same thing as what you were mentioning. I love it – I rarely have a problem with smell (tho, well, I live with 8 bunnies so I may just not notice the smell of bunny pee anymore!) – In addition to being eco-friendly, it is also quite economical.

Actually SaveABunny uses the pine pellets you are talking about. Most of the pine pellets are fine as the harmful phenols have been processed out during drying and compression. But if you have any questions, you can call the company to be sure.

One word of suggestion followed by a caution: we tried using Equine Fresh as a litter for a while. It’s a pelletted pine similar to Feline Pine, but it seems to have a stronger pine scent and gave Maggie some respiratory issues. (Of course, even feline pine does that to her, so this may not be just this litter.) Equine Fresh is available to Tractor Supply Co., and only costs about $6 for a 40lb bag. It’s also made from recycled material, so it is earth-friendly, but it does not say on their website that all aromatic hydrocarbons are removed – though it does say that under their bedding made specifically for small pets. Again, just make sure that it isn’t too strong for your bun. Oh, I also think the texture is a little bit rough, but it’s no worse than feline pine. Anyway, I used to get 3 bags at a time and it would last for about 3 months. Not bad for $12 and change! Too bad we had to stop using it when we realized it was the case of Maggie’s wheezing, because it worked great at absorption and odor control. Now we just use old newspapers covered with hay in the box in their cage and Yesterday’s News in the box outside (since it doesn’t seem to get used as often; with the YN I don’t have to change it nearly as often).

From what I’ve read in many sources, Yesterday’s news cat litter is the exact same as yesterday’s news rabbit litter; just a larger bag. I’ve been using it without incident for a few months now, and it does look exactly the same as the yesterdays news rabbit litter.

On a side note, I was in a home type store the other day and saw “wood stove pellets’…I’ve read that some people use this…Does anyone here use them? Are they safe? They certainly look cheaper!!

Wood stove pellets are supposed to be safe, so long as they’ve been compressed enough to drive out the aromatic hydrocarbons (what gives pine its scent). If it has a strong pine smell, you might want to avoid it. Oh, and some of them come with various accellerants in them – basically lighter fluid. Obviously, you want to avoid those. Feline Pine, All-pet pine, Equine Fresh, and Cozy ‘n’ Fresh are all made basically the same way wood stove pellets are: softwoods are pulverized, then fused into pellets under high heat and pressure. Aspen Supreme is made similarly, but using hardwoods rather than softwoods, so it’s not supposed to have even as much odor as Feline Pine et al (though I’ve never tried it; rather expensive).

I think Yesterday’s News Rabbit Litter may be the same as the “softer texture” YN cat product. We use the regular texture cat litter just because it’s what’s available, but make sure you don’t pick up softer texture with fresh scent by mistake. My experience with that mimics Binky’s: buns turned their noses up at it.

As long as the wood stove pellets say they are “100% natural” or “No Accellerants” they should be safe to use.  Some pelleted fuels add hydrocarbons to make them burn hotter, these are the ones to avoid.  I used the wood stove pellets for a while but then switched back to the Aspen pellets.  The wood stove pellets take absolutely forever to compost, so I switched.  You will find that the pellet size of the wood stove pellets is considerably larger than the pellet size of the other litters, and may cause traction problems fro some buns.  I got around this by putting a layer of hay over them in the box.

hrm…Well maybe I’ll give them a go then!! They are way cheaper and with three buns I’m going through my litter fast…
Right now I mix yesterdays news with care freash (just to add bulk to the pellets) and in the girls boxes I put hay on top, they like to eat on the toilet…Kahlua even likes to nap in there…Rupert cannot have hay in his box because he is sooo food oriented he thinks ‘why pee on perfectly good food!! ‘ hehe…

I just picked up a 40lb bag of wood pellets for stoves- called “Stove Chow”.  it has really made a difference with odors and is really cheap compared to litters packaged for cat or small animal use.  I got a 40lb bag for just under $4.  I am just going to have to make sure that I stock up before summer- otherwise you can’t find them anywhere.

We should start a thread that sticked at top off the forum that lists the name of the litter, ingredients, known if small animal safe, approx bag size and cost, what use it is sold for, what part of the country you found it in,  AND a picture of the ACTUAL litter- not just the bag.  Most litters you can not see thru the bag- so it would be nice to compare.  We could use a coin as a standard size reference- such as a nickel or quarter.  What do you guys think???

I ditto that is a great idea, especially with the size of the litter and a coin as reference. I find myself wondering at the size of certain litters because my two cannot stand large pellets. I used to use the Yesterday’s News but converted to Aspen Supreme which both me and the bunnies love.

yeah, I noticed that the site is bring worked on.  I think we would have a great resource if everybody contributes.  As some litters/brands are regional or will vary by country of course too.

I try to “feel” the litter in the bag- but it is so hard to tell pellet/granule size thru a plastic bag.  And the companys website almost never shows the litter- only a pic of the bag.

I was thinking of using part aspen supreme and part wood stove, since those are so insanely cheap. Bu I remember Viktor making a big old mess tossing the wood stove pellets around.

I have been trying the brand World’s best cat Litter made of corn for the cat box, works great, lots less odor. Less tracking, good clumping. I noticed dumping it out in the woods though my lab Luke was eating the cat poo…eww. But it’s totally natural even going into the landfill. For MoSimba’s box I still like the care fresh, his box is a corner box with a grate, and he loves sitting in his little litter box.
