I am getting a holland Lop soon, the breeder says he is on the larger side and will be 4 lbs, The enclosure I am planning on is 6×4 including a XL dog crate that will be their main home ( though once they are mostly litter trained the cage will always be open)

Is this enough room for a second small ( 2.5-4 lb) bunny?

They will get out of enclosure time as well.

I am in no rush to get a second rabbit but i do know its something we may want to do and want to be prepared for that possibility.

Also I was planning on using liners for inside the cage, Is there any reason I should or should not do this?

another though was using a fleece liner in the litter box since I have read they like to pee on soft things.

Hmm, I’m not sure, but I’ll ask some other members if they know. I know the minimum for one rabbit is being able to jump 3 times without nose/bum hitting either side, being able to fully stand up and fully flop out in any direction. Maybe double that to get the minimum? I’m not sure but I’ll ask around and hopefully get somebody who knows more about cage sizes. (My bun has my bedroom to live in so she has plenty of space…)

well With my bun being only about 1 ft long that would be about 3 ft x3 ft … 9 sq ft, double that is 18 and i am still over that.

You need to have enough room that prebonding, or if bonding fails, they each have a reasonable amount of space in separate habitats.

One foot long sitting, much longer stretched out or in stride.

From what I read it should be 1 ft stretched out. I haven’t met my bun yet.

If/when I look for a second bun I will get a second pen and both can be housed ( separately ) in a 4×4 pen.

It’s 24 sq feet? If so, that should be fine for two buns. Are they both from the same litter? If not, you will want two pens for bonding

I actually decided to sell the cage for ease of cleaning and buy a second playpen to make an 8×4 pen. This will also be helpful if we get a second rabbit as I can set the pens up side by side ( 4×4 each) and take up the same space of course I would have to put a solid divider in between the cages at first.

Tenzin was the only one available from his litter and had already been separated from other rabbits.

I am in no rush for a second rabbit I need to get into a routine with the first first
