› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Emergency – Layla really sick!
Layla hasn’t eaten anything or pooped since lunch time (9hrs ago) and she’s really looking sick. The bunny who never sleeps and doesn’t trust us is huddle in a corner with her eyes closed, not moving. I’m patting her every few minutes just to make sure she’s alive.
We don’t have an emergency vet here who treats rabbits, the closest one is more than 3 hours away in Sydney!!!
We’ve given her Simethicone like Dana K. suggests and since her ears are really cold we’ve got the heater going and covered her with a blanket.
Help, there’s no vet until tomorrow morning at 8am, almost 12 hours away.
I’ve felt her stomach, it feels tight like Charlie’s was so I think she has gas, can I give her asprin or something?
I don’t have the proper knowledge for treatment, but just hit the Alert button on your post to get a Moderator to see this and get someone who can help. I’d hold off on the aspirin until you get advice, but it sounds like you’re doing well so far. Gently rub her tummy if she lets you in case it’s gas and it can be moved along. Can you call the Emer. and make the appointment now, or at least call a local dog/cat vet that you can bring her in to right away? usually they are good enough in a pinch.

I have just emailed BB for help

I would not give her aspirin – I would try to hand feed her some pellet slurry if you can though.
Keep us updated once you get her to a vet.
i’m not sure what time it is where you are, but i hope everything is okay with Layla. i’m sending some healing vibes her way. those stasis scares are very frightening. i agree with Sarita some pellet slurry is a great idea, you can also give her some water by syringe.
Isn’t there some over the counter kids medicine that you can give bunny’s for gas?
Not having kids, I’m not up on all the kids medicine.
((((((((((((((healing vibes for sweet Layla)))))))))))))))
^^^yes. it’s simethecone (spelling is probably wrong…)
baby gas drops (Mylicon, Lil Tummies, i think there’s a Gas-X baby kind)
Any news? Were you able to get her to the vet? Is she feeling better?
i think 5pm EST is 8am her time… so it’s still the middle of the night over there…

Please keep us posted- I do hope it’s just a bout of gas and she’s feeling better now!!!
Gentle tummy rubs can also help, good job with the heater it’s important to not let her temp drop.
I hope everything is ok, sending healing vibes and warm hugs to mama,
It was gas,t eh simethicone gradually began working last night, sorry for not updating…bunny emergencies take over your life.
Tanks guys, you’ve reassured me that I did just the right thing. She’s so tiny and fragile, I can’t believe how quickly these things happen.
I didn’t give aspirin, just warmth & love and the hot water bottle really seemed to help. I thinkshe appreciated it cause she snuggled into it until Charlie (the little snot) finally decided to comfort her and love her. It was really all up hill from there.
Maybe if charlie wasn’t so self-obsessed she might have gotten better quicker…I don’t know how bunnies work, I’m just glad she’s looking more alert now!
Lisa – thanks, I have a print out of that near my vet’s phone number, best article in te world! Youre doing a good thing to recommend it cause a lot of people don’t know much about this, I certainly didn’t until Charlie got sick a few weeks ago, when the article became my bunny bible!
I spoke with my vet about baby aspirin and she said it was fine but you don’t really know the dosage and it’s more for joint pain than for gas pain. It’s also chewable low dose. I asked her about it for some of my rabbits who have arthritis – she said that now they normally recommend Metacam for this but she doesn’t rule out some of the other older NSAID’s as she has used those in the past but it’s not really the medication (I think) you would be wanting to give a rabbit who isn’t eating.
Glad she seems better and it was smart of you to keep her warm.
Well, I got here late. I’m a late-nighter, so I’m also a late riser. So all I can say now is WHEW!!! Thank goodness Layla is feeling better. Rabbits can really give us a scare since we need to act fast to solve the problem. For future reference, it might be a good idea to ask your vet if there is an emergency vet that they can recommend. I keep a copy of printed directions to the emergency vet. Nothing like being in a panic and trying to find out where something is in the middle of the night.
HUGS!
Sarita thanks for finding out about aspirin -another thing to have on hand for emergencies is great!!
Cassi&Charlie Thank goodness she’s doing well!! I’m so glad to hear that!! *HUGS*
BB – you over estimate the amount of vets in our area, there are three who treat bunnies & all of them close at 6pm & open at 8am. I almost screamed at the poor receptionist at the emergency vet when she said they don’t treat rabbits but I guess it’s better for me to have her at home then a vet who doesn’t know how to treat rabbits give her medicine she can’t take or something.
Thanks so much for all your help, I’m just going to keep a really close eye on her now. You guys are so great!!! I’m really really glad I’m on this forum & so don’t have to go through these things alone. Thank you.
Glad to hear she’s feeling better. I just reread my post and didn’t say it clearly, because I hit the Alert button myself to try to get a Leader for you when I wrote that. Duh. Anyway, Lisa and Sarita and Beka got to you soon, so it seems everyone had some help to give you. Glad it was the correct action to take, and I hope She feels much better now.
Cassi, just reading this now. Glad all is well. Must have been scare after Charlies episode. Does Layla let you handle her much? Jersey doesn’t like it too much but when I suspect she has gas, she allows me to touch her tummy more than usual. I’ve found a massage helps. Also, I put her on her back in my lap, feet towards me, and gently push her hind legs forward. Sort of like ab crunches for bunnies. This seems to work somewhat as well.
I’m glad to hear that Layla is doing better! It was a very good idea to use the simethicone, my bunny just started stasis a couple days ago and that is also the first thing that we gave to her. When we took her to the vet she got a Metacam shot, and she also got oral meds for motility. Do you keep critical care on hand? That might be another thing to add to your emergency vet.
Cassi&Charlie – yes, I am rather lucky to have many rabbit savvy vets near me that I forget it is not always quite the luxury for others. So sorry as I can only imagine how frustrating that must be in a late night emergency.
I’m just so glad that it all worked out, and you have received some great advice on care.
Yep, frusterating is right. I’m actually going to call around the small towns, we have a town about an hour away that might have emergency vets who treat rabbits, it’s worth it to know but an hour is a hefty drive (all along highway though).
You guys all seem to commute so much, if I drive more than 10mins in one day I’m exhausted! Mostly I just ride my bike or catch a bus, it’s far less tiring.
i am the same way C&C. where i live most everything is within 20 minutes tops of me, so if i have to go much further, it’s a big production. i am fortunate that where i live i have everything very close by. i know there are others who live in more rural areas where they have to drive 30 or 40 minutes to get to a grocery store. that i could not imagine.
regardless, i am so happy she’s feeling better!
So glad to hear Layla is better!
oh lucky!!
I have a ten minute drive to work. Fifteen to go visit my parents. About ten minutes to go to stores, but to my volunteering at HS its half an hour, and to the rabbit rescue/horse rescue it’s forty minutes!!
I am so glad everything turned out ok. Those bunnies sure can give you a scare sometimes.
Glad to hear everything went okay. It’s so scary when they get sick. Very stressful.
