That’s so scary! The best thing to do is to get them calmed down, but that’s hard when you’re freaking out because they’re choking!
Definitely follow up with the vet. There are several potential underlying health problems. One of my current buns (Rosie) has seizures, and if she has one while eating, she’ll choke. The seizures are “partial seizures” and not very noticeable, so when they first started happening, I thought she was just choking every now and then.
One of my previous buns died from a cardiac cardiac problem about a month after a choking incident. We didn’t know she had the cardiac problem until the vet autopsied (which we did because we had no clue why she died). The vet thought the choking incident might have been related somehow to the cardiac problem (??). I didn’t take her to the vet after the choking incident b/c I thought she was simply choking
I’m a smarter bun owner now.
