Educating Perth people on rabbits, I guess they don’t want to know

I was looking on one of those rabbit spaces and found a few people from Perth Western Australia.

I came across this one rabbit that loved eating chocolate, cheetos and ice-cream. I thought gee that is going to make that bunny really sick, so I decided to email them and let them know (see below) I did think maybe they would take it the wrong way as some people don’t like to be told.

I should maybe keep my mouth shut; I feel if I can educate people in the correct way to look after bunnies then maybe it might help save one from serious illness.

I also always give this site a plug in helping to achieve this.

This site is just for fun, just because B loves these things, and has them in her list of foods she likes, doesnt mean she gets them continuously.

Her response sure is not shocking to me. I have dealt with that over and over. But that’s okay, there are people who will listen and that’s all you can do is just inform and educate and it’s up to everyone else to learn from it. So, you tried Lisa, and thanks for plugging the site.

I also find that there are some people who basically give off the feeling of “who cares, I know what i know” and they get really strange and defensive. It is hard for people to set their egos aside, but sometimes people end up not letting you know that you affected them, but they end up changing their ways. Then there are others who really don’t believe you and don’t care to listen at all and end up learning from experience at the bunny’s expense. Hopefully their bunny has a stomach of steel. The problem with this issue is many bunnies that are fed these things (even if not everyday)will develop a serious imbalance overtime, and because it’s over time, the person won’t ever think to attribute a sudden death or illness to those bad foods.

But kudos to you for letting them know.

you definitely did lisa.  i know exactly what binky bunny is saying… some people just have stubborn pride that won’t allow them to say "really?  i didn’t know that it!"  i think its well worth it to plant the seed even the ones who react with "i know whats best for my bunny."   you never know if they’ll look into it anyways after they’re done with their childishly defensive reaction.  being completely stubborn and having taken well over 25 yrs to know when to swallow my silly independant pride, i feel very qualified to comment on this

It’s so hard not to say something sometimes.
I know since working at the rabbit rescue, I have heard some terrible reasons/excuses for why people are giving up their pet. There have been so many times when I want to say “Well have you tried this……” but when you really stop to think maybe it;s better they don’t keep the pet and end up neglecting them.
But this lady seems to have no clue. She loves her rabbit and so she feeds it foods that will ultimately kill it. So sad

it amazes me all the stupid things that people somehow justify feeding to their rabbits I do hope she’ll end up looking into it more and make some healthier choices for the bunny’s sake.

It’s terrible that some owners can be so ignorant. It’s unfair to the bunny since he just wants to eat what tastes good, he doesn’t know what will make him sick.

I went back and had a look at the bunnies picture, she is 10 months old and is already well over weight.

I guess thats too much chocolate, cheetos and ice-cream.

Since all bunny discussion must eventually come back to poo, can you imagine the smelly, sticky mess this poor bun puts out eating all of that trash?  When we first got Marilyn I was feeding her a spoonful of oat groats and wheat berries each day for extra calories, and after a couple of days of that I managed to give her poopy butt.  I cannot imagine what ice cream is doing to that poor bunny’s insides.

I guess it is with all pets and animals.   All responsible pet owners should be aware of feeding their pets a good quality diet … however, I have seen people give their dogs potato chips and other savoury and sugary items which should be avoided.

They don’t need it … and to that fact nor do HUMANS! LOL

Dawn – you got that right! Sure is hard for us humans (at least this human) to avoid those things.
