Eatting litter

I caught Parsnip munching on her litter today!    We buy something similar to equine pine (different brand, same stuff).  She was sitting in her litter box munching away and looked up at me like “what?  Aren’t I suppose to eat these?” and continued to eat more.  I kicked her out of her litter box and tried to cover up that part with some shredded paper.  She seems ok.  But just want to ask if anyone else’s bun has tried to eat their litter before?  I think she’ll try to eat anything she can get her teeth into!

Cotton had been eating litter some too.  Didn’t hurt him.  Was Aspen pine with the odor removed. HE also ate the carefresh b4 too.

I wouldnt’ worry about it.  They may do that from time to time.  Unless your bunny is eating it as a main course then I would change something.

What worried me was Cotton was eating the litter on a regular basis along with newspaper instead of his hay.  So I started with the variety and I threw that bale out was a big horse sized bale.  He hasnt’ eaten his litter like that since.

I also suppose somethign was wrong with that particular bale we threw out couple of months ago. Hubby brought it home  after halloween. It was a decoration for someone’s yard.  But I dont’ think your bunny has the same problem.  

IF a piece of litter falls off of Ruby the next morning Cotton will find it and eat it.  He does not want any other bunny’s smell anywhere near him. Terrible brat isn’t he?  But no it doesn’t seem to hurt them.

I use Carefresh and I catch all 3 of my buns eating it.

Whew, that clears my mind!  I never saw Mickey eat his litter and I had never see Archie and Gracie eat theirs so it was kind of a surprise to me when I walked in on her eating that!  I think that’s her thing right now with her hormones and such (she’s due to get spayed this month) is to chew anything and everything.  She goes through a popsicle stick like that!  She eats her veggies but she’s so slow, she’ll take 1/2 the day to eat just the first part of her veggies unlike my two who inhale it!

I just didn’t want her to get sick.  The woman that runs the shelter is so tight on money and space that she had to temp. shut down the shelter because she doesn’t have anymore room.  I wish I could help her out but I myself am tight on money also.

Can you do a thin layer of hay over the top maybe? I think all buns might eat some of their litter from time to time (which is also why it’s so important to be conscious of what type you’re using) but I would try to discourage this. If the shredded paper continues to work (and doesn’t make her want to dig in it too much) that’s a good solution too.
