my 4 month old Mini Lop, Liela, has found a new interest in ripping, chewing, and eating magazines. she seems to eat about a page a day. is that ok or should i take it away? is there something better and similar i should give her instead?

I would give her some rabbit appropriate chew toys instead. Rabbits this age love to chew. Of course even giving her those toys doesn’t guarantee she is going to chew those instead but I would take away the magazines and try to entice her with them.

Are you certain she is actually eating them though?

yeah she’s definitely eating them. she has other chew toys, but this particular issue of Cosmopolitan is her flavor of the week. I guess i don’t mind that she’s eating it as long as it’s not bad for her. is it bad for her?

My bun has this same problem – he loves to eat Wine Spectator :-P. Unfortunately, glossy magazine paper isn’t good for buns to eat so she would be much better off with newspaper or a phone book (covers removed).

I don’t know why some buns are far more attracted to glossy paper – maybe it tastes good? – but I know there are chemicals in it that aren’t good for them.

i’ll find a phonebook, i’m sure she’d like that too. she likes the paper bound together i think, she digs at a page at a time. my ocd bunny.

Is it glossy paper, or just whatever they know they’re not supposed to have? 😀

I’ll give Quincy something that seems to suit his taste, but he generally prefers my books or whatever I thought was out of reach but wasn’t quite.  (There is nothing quite like forgetting to put the paper towels away after cleaning and watching a stream of them go shooting across the floor!)

I wouldn’t care if Otto chewed up old magazines, but because he likes to eat large strips I don’t allow him – the glossy coating just isn’t good for him.

If I’m reading a magazine on the floor with him, I’ll let him take a nibble or two, but no more than that and I don’t let him grab big strips and eat them. Or sometimes I’ll put my magazine or book inside a phone book and hold it that way. He tries to chew what I’m reading and ends up chewing on his phonebook.
