every morning i give pumpkin a digestive tablet from oxbow and she normally goes crazy over it and eats it right away. today when i gave her one she ran over to me and ripped it out of my hand like she always does, but then she dropped it and went to her hideout. I gave her some gas medicine and she took it, she never does that when shes sick. then i gave her pellets and she ate them. i gave her a piece of cilantro split in half and it took her a minute to seem interested but eventually she took the half with all the leaves and ate that but she left the other half that was just stem. shes also eating hay. what could be wrong? treats are usually her favorite thing but today she doesnt want it? she ate all of her breakfast this morning which was just 2 hours ago.

shes molted not long ago, but i brushed her a lot and gave her a digestive tablet every day and she never had any gas episodes (usually she does when she sheds) i was thinking that the tablets were working, could this be gas even though shes eating everything else?

there has been a lettuce shortage here for the past few days but luckily i havent completely run out. yesterday i had to get romaine from a different store (i usually get it from walmart, this store sells more locally) could this have done something? i gave it to her last night and she seemed completely fine.

You could try 0.5-1 ml of simethicone baby gas drops, and a very light tummy massage. Put her down somewhere away from where she normally hangs out so she must hop to get there. Repeat every 30-40 minutes for a few hours.

If the treat is hard, it could mean she is having some dental discomfort, but turning down the cilantro is unusual. Usually eating selectivity is the first sign of a tooth problem. I agree it also could be some GI discomfort. I think continuing to offer food she will eat and a belly rub are a good step. A nice big pile of wet salad often help because it’s hydrating as well.

I completely agree with Dana, it could be a sign of gum/tongue tenderness due to some dental problem. It doesnt have to be a serious dental issue, some buns are very sensitive. I had one whose vet didnt think his tiny tiny molar spurs could be the cause of his inappetence. After 3 weeks (during which I fed him CC and he only ate fresh willow willingly), they finally decided to give him a burr. And voila, a cpl days later, he was right back to his “old” self.

I’d try the drops, massage and light “exercise” first though. If that doesnt make a difference, I’d say its time to book an appt with a rabbit savvy vet.

thanks for the advice! i think i found out what the problem was. i went and got her usual brand of lettuce (it was finally back in stock) and fresh cilantro and she ate it all immediately when i offered it to her. she ate all her salad and pellets this evening and has been eating hay all day.

she also pooped not long ago and it looks the same as it usually does.

im pretty sure she was upset that the romaine was different and the cilantro wasn’t very fresh. she can be very picky sometimes. i tried to give her a digestive tablet just now and she didnt want it, but then i offered one of those oxbow heart shaped treats and she ate it! they are much harder than the digestive tablets so im not too sure that its a dental problem now. it is strange that she doesn’t want it though. maybe because shes been getting half of one 2 times a day shes just tired of them? i may stop offering them to her for a week or two and see if that changes anything. if this happens again im going to make her a vet appointment asap.

Good detective work! Glad she’s eating better now, and that sounds like a good plan 🙂
