        Hello,

I was cleaning the rabbits litter pans yesterday and what I normally do is put a layer of Aspen bedding at the bottom of the pan and then put a  thick layer of the yersterdays news litter on top of the aspen bedding…. this helps save a little money because its not all Yesterdays News litter which is a bit more expensive than the aspen….

Well after I’d finish cleaning a litter pan one of my rabbits Buzz was going to each litter pan and he would sniff around the aspen and then he would start chewing/eating certain pieces of the aspen. He wouldn’t just eat any old piece, he would sniff around til he found the right one… i was getting scared because after i’d shooo him away he would go right to the other little pan and starting digging through the aspen…. finally after 10 minutes of him not  stopping – I took all the aspen out of the pans and just filled it completely with the YN’s litter since I was worried he was going to get sick.

I have been using the aspen for a year now and I never noticed him take interest to the new aspen bedding like that….  and it wasn’t a brand new bag of aspen either… I’d been using that same bag for the last week so I have no clue why he had the sudden urge to chew on some of the pieces like that…

Has this happened to anyone else? He seems perfectly fine this morning.. he was eating normally..

        Thanks!

That makes me feel a little better… I was freaking out that he was going to get a blockage in his stomach. it was just weird that this ONE TIME all he wanted to do was much on it….

Are you sure they swallow it? Because the wood is good for grinding down their teeth and maybe they don’t exactly eat it, like we chew gum.
(Could be wishful thinking on my part.)
