My bunny Clover is about 5-6 months old and he likes to go out in his outdoor pin while I am out doing yard work or outside with the dog and so on. He loves it out there and he a lot of grass while hes out. I noticed when he gets let outside he does not eat as much hay. Is it okay for him to eat grass but not hay or should I limit his time outside so he will eat his hay. He still eats his pellets and small handful of hay.

        Thanks.

Its ok for you rabbit to have hay and grass, as long as he still is eating hay. if he stops eating hay all together, I would suggest cutting down the time he has to eat grass. also, what kind of hay is he eating? the recommended hay for rabbits under the age of 7 months is alfalfa hay as it has the fibre a baby rabbit needs. if you aren’t feeding alfalfa he could be trying to get the fibre from the grass. hope I could help!

Grass has the same effect on bunny teeth and digestion as hay – afterall, hay is just dried grass. It’s absolutely fine to substitute the two.

The only thing I would be worried about is if he refuses to eat hay again when it stops being grass season, but as long as he continues to eat some hay, it should be fine.

Yeah, hay is just dried grass. It doesn’t matter if he eats less hay if he’s full from eating grass. They both do exactly the same (although grass is a bit richer)

Benji, alfalfa is often reccomended due to the protein content.  Not the fibre. All hay has fibre. And alfalfa isn’t necessary if bun is getting junior pellets

Thank you for the replies! even on days he doesn’t get to go outside he still eats his hay. He is also on Sherwood pellets and gets a little bit of alfalfa every week or so. For a while he was only eating alfalfa hay so I have been weaning him off. He wasn’t interested in the timothy or orchard grass anymore so I decided to wean him off the alfalfa. Good to know the grass is an okay substitute every once and a while for him. He loves it! Thank you all for your input I appreciate it!
