Sore hocks can come from carpeting too. (just be sure to keep bunny nails trimmed – that helps a lot to prevent sore hocks on carpet) Actually the lino or laminat flooring over the mats is a good option! We used to do that in our old place. Gave some nice cushioning underneath the lino. We also were able to go to carpet stores and purchase carpet sample squares for a couple of bucks. We then put a few of those on the lino for them to hang out on if they wanted.
I currently have Aria over commercial (but a bit softer) carpet squares — but that’s because she doesn’t pee anywhere but in her box. Thank goodness. She loves to dig up carpet though, so I have had to get the tight knit carpet — she can get sore hocks with this though as it’s a little rougher than standard carpet, but it gives her the traction she loves for binkying, and so I have sea grass mats where she sits and lounges the most and that stopped the sore hock issue.
