Why do rabbit’s ears change from warm to a little chilly?

        Just curious..

Rabbits’ ears have a large bare surface which can radiate heat off and away from the rabbit’s body. So when a rabbit is warm, his ears get warm to cool him off.

ears stay cool when there is no need to radiate off any heat.

Griffin’s ears are usually really warm- almost never cold.  But I think I read his breed- English Lop- their ears act as a radiator with so much blood flow to help with cooling the pet.  So his ears must be warm from all the bloodflow.  There have been times I was SURE he peed on me- and it was just the warmth of his ears after cuddling for awhile.

And I know that hutched outside English Lops are not supposed to have water crocks in case their ears get wet- it chills the ears too much and the rabbit especially in cool/cold weather.

I constantly worry about the temp of my bunnies’ ears. It seems Fiver in particular has very warm ears from time to time. Then they’ll cool off. And warm again. I think his little body must radiate so much energy it has to be expelled somewhere. (When he’s not racing around on the bed like a NASCAR driver, that is.)

Just dittoing what others have said. Ears help a bunny regulate their body heat. When they are warm, the vessels in their ears expand with blood– the blood in their ears then is cooled off from the surrounding temperature— as the blood then travels from their ears to the rest of their body, it can cool off their body. If they are trying to preserve heat, then the vessels will shrink. This can make their ears feel cool/cold. It’s normal for ears to feel warm, then cool and different points. Just their way to regulate their body temp.

If a bunny is injured or ill AND their ears are cold, then that can be a sign something is wrong with their temperature (shock, etc), but cold ears on a healthy bunny is normal.

Jack and Vivian’s ears change throughout the day. Warm to Cool and back again several times per day.
