Hi all, for those that didn’t see my other thread, we are fostering a sweet little senior bun (Bun Jovi). He seems to be in great health (eating hay and pooping like a champ, very active + relaxed, flopping), but I noticed one of his third eyelids seems swollen. At first I thought it was maybe just looking different because he’s a REW, but the other eye looks different.

Do you think it’s cherry eye? I’m not familiar with it at all, but I have heard of it, and have seen a bad case in person.

Will most likely take him to the vet tomorrow (depending on what the rescue advises), but wanted some opinions here.

He also has no problem with me touching all around his face, and I don’t feel any other swelling.

Here is the normal eye (I am pulling his eye open a bit, sorry for the rotated image):

And here is the abnormal eye (I am pulling his eye open a bit):

Yes I would say that’s cherry eye, You should make an appointment with the vet before it gets worse. I have never had a problem with cherry eye myself but I can tell that it is cherry eye.

Looks like a spot of conjunctivitis to me. Eye drops or ointment should do the trick at the vet’s

Just got back from the vet, turns out Bun Jovi had cherry eye surgery on that eye about 2.5 years ago.

The vet didn’t think it looked too bad. Since he was just returned to the shelter about a week ago (and I don’t think they really noticed it), we don’t really know how long it’s been like this.

Discussed it with the rescue and the vet, and we are going to keep an eye on it (no pun intended!) and see if it stays the same or starts getting worse. As it could just be normal for that eye due to his past surgery. If it get’s worse he’ll most likely have the surgery again to re-attach it, and prob a biopsy just to make sure it’s not lymphoma (unlikely since he has a history of cherry eye).

The rescue said I should just come and do their rabbit intakes since I am always finding medical issues. :p

It doesn’t look too bad to me. That side might just be a bit abnormal, even with surgery. Wooly has a problem on one side. It isn’t cherry eye. He actually had a torn third eyelid when he was young. Sometimes it protrudes… sometimes it doesn’t. It’s just normal for him now since the damage was permanent.

Fingers crossed he doesn’t need surgery, you and Bun Jovi have dealt with more than enough already (can’t believe he’s been returned so many times )

How sweet that he let’s you touch his face so soon

Thanks guys, yeah we are wondering if maybe that’s just how it looks for him, so going to monitor for now. It definitely isn’t causing him pain, as he let me poke and prod his face all over (and tooth purred all the while).

And yes hoping for no surgery!
