Considering we all know bunnies ears are super delicate and help in regulating their body temperature it struck me in shock when my vet told me they tattoo their ears after a spay/neuter. I had never heard of this, I know its done for dogs and cats etc but for a bunny sounded far fetched! I told them I didn’t want my poor girl tattooed when I bring her in for a spay later this week, but I was just wondering some opinions. Is it safe and ok to get bunnies tattooed or is it better to leave it undone.

I haven’t heard of this for spay/neuter, but it’s very common for showing rabbits, so it is safe.

Maybe a better option would be to get her microchipped, then it would be in the system that she’s spayed?

I think some vets will also do a tattoo near where they would shave to prep for the surgery, that way if they ever went to spay the bun again they would see the tattoo, but normally you wouldn’t be able to see it. (My Bertha had this… she was found, they took her in to be spayed, then the vet found the tattoo when they went to spay her).

As Dana says, ear tattoos are still done these days, but micro chipping is becoming more and more common for identification purposes. This is because a bun needs to be asleep for the tattoo, but not for microchipping, and because an ear tattoo can become illegible with time.
