So my bun is an 8 week old female lop/Rex mix. I’ve had her for about 4 days and I’ve noticed something strange. She started scratching her ears a lot… abnormal amounts. So i looked up what it meant and no helpful answers came up. Then about a day ago she started doing something else. She did a half “binky” move and shook her head. Then she countinued to do this for another few minutes. At this point I had told my dad about it and he didn’t know either. I did more research and it sounds like ear mites?? She sleeps on my enclosed porch, inside a hutch. But as soon as I wake up, I put her in another crate inside my home. Besides that she seems pretty normal, behavioral wise. She’s eating, using the bathroom and going on with her day just as normal. As I type this she is still scratching!! If you have any idea what this is, let me know asap. Will I need to take her to the vet? Or can I treat it with ear drops? Should I be concerned if she continues this?? I’ll continue to research ear mites and analyze her behavior more and more. After all, I’ve only had her less than a week. I’ll be sure to keep you updated! Thank you!!

I agree that you are probably right about the ear mites. If you make a vet appointment they should be able to give you ear drops or another topical to fix the problem. Mites and other parasites are common in new bunnies. Is there any way you can bring her inside full time? In addition to being better for your bunny’s socialization, it could reduce the amount of parasites she comes into contact with.

Half binkies with a head shake are normal happy bunny behaviour, however the constant ear scratching is not. The ear scratching could certainly be a sign of ear mites. As she is new to your family anyway, taking her to the vet for a wellness check up is always a good idea with any new pet.
