Recently my rabbit got diagnosed with two ear infections. When we got her home at maybe 1:00 pm until just a few minutes ago she’s been breathing very weird and kinda fast.  She just started breathing kinda normal but still slightly weird. She has no discharge from her nose and isn’t using her mouth to breathe and I just have the most horrible feeling that she’s going to die. I know that the sinuses and ears are connected so could her ear infection cause an upper respiratory infection? Is this a normal part of the recovery process? She is on Baytril and Metacam so should we just wait it out or should we find an emergency vet that takes rabbits? What if they aren’t super experienced? I dont know what to do and am wondering if i am overreacting

Is she acting normal now?? I’m so sorry this must be so stressful for you.

The airways and the ears are connected via the ear trumpet, so an infection has the potential to spread from the ears or vice versa.

I am not a vet so I cant rule out that this is an emergency. If she was stressed out from a vet visit and car ride it could perhaps explain a higher frequency of breathing. The best thing would be if you could find a vet to call and ask. Breathing difficulties should be taken seriously.  How long has she been on Baytril?

Some bunnies take longer to recover from the stress of a car ride and vet appointment. Rapid breathing can be a sign of stress. Does she look like she’s having trouble breathing at all? Tipping her head back or a wheezing sound? Anything like that?

Hey guys. Unfortunate news, she did pass away last night. She wasn’t wheezing or anything but she was extremely weak. I’ll miss her but I am glad she isn’t in pain anymore or feeling sick. My dad was with her when she passed so she wasn’t alone. Thanks for all the help and the best vibes to you and your bunnies

Thanks for all of the kind words, I really appreciate it. Instead of wallowing in sadness and grief the day after she passed I was able to have a good day, minus her death. Making sure I wasn’t super upset the first day has made the grieving process a whole lot easier. I’m doing better now, and I appreciate all of your kindness! I can only hope that my two buns are flopping and binkying around together. Again, thanks for all of your condolences
