My 10-year-old Penny, a holland lop, was diagnosed with ear infection a week ago. She had fallen down and couldn’t get up or stand on her own. The vet sent us home with antibiotics, probiotics and painkillers. For a week, she was getting better. Up until yesterday, she was progressively hopping around. This morning, we found her fallen over and unable to get up on her own, but it’s worse than the previous couple of days because now her right hind leg seems impaired, when before it was just her front right paw. She’s head-tilting still, and also much more reluctant to take her medicine.

Eating is OK — she refused to eat pellets but ate greens like dandelion. Her poo is much smaller than usual but we figured it’s because she isn’t eating pellets. We syringe feed her a lot of water, although yesterday, we put her in front of her water bottle and she was able to drink on her own.

Is the infection getting worse and are the antibiotics are not working? If so, what does alternative treatment look like? Or is it normal in recovery that she’d have bad days and good days? Why is she all of a sudden unwilling to take the medicine that she loved eating just a few days earlier? Is it possible that she knows she is dying already?

Thank you in advance for all of your help. -Cat

The limb weakness is concerning. Is the vet certain it’s a bacterial ear infection?

The vet never specified what kind of infection it was. I’m doing some reading now and it seems like if the infection spread to her brain, it could be something called meningoencephalitis.

              So sorry 🙁

Definitely share this information with your vet. I wonder if a subcutaneous antibiotic might be necessary?
