Dyson vacuums?

well, the ol’ Dirt Devil finally died.

i’ve been wanting a Dyson since they came out, but 1) they are expensive, 2) they are very expensive, and 3) i want to know that they can for sure handle what i need it for… (lots of fur, bits of hay/willow, and poop.) 

i do pick up big pieces of whatever before i vacuum, but i’m still always sucking up something…

does anyone have this brand, and if yes, what type do you have?  does it work well, is it true that it does not clog, or if it does clog, is it easy enough to get unclogged.  my main issue with the dirt devil was that i could only take it apart so much so i was always trying to dig stuff out of the hose.

thoughts, suggestions?

or any other type/brand of upright, canister vac you like?  i need lightweight most of all.  i’m undecided if i wanna get a cheapy and replace it every year, or get the BIG ONE… but then i need to know it will last for awhile…

I have a dyson.  I LOVE it.  We’ve had it about two years now and it’s going steady!  It is able to handle all the bunny poop you can throw at it,…or you know…put under it to suck up, and it has no problem with pet hair.  Hay sometimes gets stuck because of the corners but the good thing about dysons are that anywhere there is a corner or a possibilty of things getting stuck at all the piece comes apart.  So you just pop the piece off, take out the hay and get back on your way.  It can handle short strands of hay no problem though.  I usually pick up what I can with my hands or a broom first and then use the vacuum for teh rest of it. 

Yes, they are expensive, we got ours from HSN so we did monthly payments.  But, my dad who refuses to buy a dyson because they are so expensive has been through FOUR $100+  vacuums since I got my dyson, so if he had just sucked it up and bought the dyson he’d have paid for it already and saved himself a lot of headache!

Yes, I have 3 of these. Does it clog – yes, it clogs with the long pieces of hay and some of the vegetables but it’s easy to unclog once you figure out how to do that.

I have one especially for the rabbit room (the other 2 are for upstairs and one for downstairs).

The problem I have with the Dyson is that the cylinder hose attachment (not sure what the proper name for this is) is too long so I had to rig it with a shorter hose from another vacuum cleaner I had. I’m talking about the “telescopic wand” – this just does not work for me to clean my condos and really get down and clean the fecal pellets and stuff for my messier rabbits – they don’t seem to make a shorter one due to the design of the vacuum.

Now – as far as cleaning fecal pellets from just the regular part (not the telescopic part) – it is okay, still takes some work to get it to suck up the fecal pellet.

Now, as far as fur and anything else – nothing can beat this that I’ve tried.

These are big and bulky vacuums. I have a regular one (D07), a ball one, and the DC14 I think. I use the regular one that I rigged up for the rabbit room.

I tried a Bissell and I did not like the design – it kept hitting me on the head when I was cleaning the rabbit areas and I didn’t feel it cleaned well.

I think ideally for the rabbits I would like to have a shop vac but the ones I’ve seen are bulky and loud and well, now that I’ve rigged my Dyson up I’m pretty happy with it.

I do agree with TuickerBunz too – I have gone through many of the cheaper brands much quicker.

i saw the ball one (i think it’s yellow and gray) and about 400 bucks. i saw they have one specific for naimals but that one is about 550-600 i believe. and i think it’s heavier. any rec. which model i get?

I think the animal one just has extra attachments that you may or may not use. I think my purple one might be the animal – I’ll check at home and let you know.

I don’t really like the ball one – I find it more difficult to manage.

I think if you look at their website they have all the differences.  But, the differences between the DC07 and the DC14 are really small.  I have a DC07.  And I think Sarita is right with it just being the attachments.  They’re all really good about pet hair though.

We just bought a Bissell Healthy Home vacuum – it has the same type of suction as a Dyson and all the reviews say it works just as well – but it was only $250. Still a lot more than the average vacuum, but much less than a Dyson. Haven’t tried it out yet, but I’ll let you know how it works for us.

That was one of the ones that my dad bought.  It was the one before the latest that he had.  I think it lasted like a year?  But, that was just one..it could have had a fluke and my dad has a history of being rough on his vacuums LOL

My husband bought the Dyson Animal for me one day when it was on sale on Amazon, and we looove it for fur and dirt pick up. We usually do, however, go around with a shop vac before using the Dyson because it was so expensive we don’t want to “hurt” it. Try looking around online for the re-furbished ones, thats what I have and it was totally fine when I received it and much cheaper than the brand new out of the box ones.

I have 2 Dysons- I have the full size animal- had it since it came out and it is wondeful. We also have the new hand held yellow one that works very well also. But just like any other handheld if the stuff itsnt completely sucked up then it will fall back out.

I have one and it is actually really nice! It does clog but is easy as pie to unclog!

By all means don’t let me talk you out of the dyson, because I’d have one in a hot second if it were in the cards financially (YES we are vacuum-aholics…we have the roomba, a bissel, a shop vac and a dustbuster. With three free range rabbits, eleven litter boxes and lots of hay-we vacuum often more then three times a day…)

My main vacuum is a bissel powerforce bagless. It was one of my moving out gifts and has been here before I got rabbits. It quickly got clogged my first house clean after I got kokanee. Dave showed me how to pull it apart, unclog it and clean the filters. There are no bags so it’s really easy-a totally helplessly clogged vacuum is new again in under fifteen minutes. It clogs all the time as I absolutely refuse to sweep (laziness not paying off when it’s time to unclog) but is sooo easy to unclog and fix and has been going for over two years and four messy rabbits and hundreds of pounds of hay and fur. It’s truly a good vacuum as well.

good to know everyone. my issue with the dirt devil was that the part that sucked up from the ground had a weird angle, and it can’t come undone to unclog. so i’m sticking stuff in there anmd trying to pull it out and it was just very frustrating…

MooBunnay: on the refurbished one was there any kind of warranty or guarantee?

i do pick up everything first with the hand vac, but there’s always something you leave behind… and you never know you sucked it up until it’s stuck.

I have one (and have had it over two years)… its the teal one and LOVE it!!! it works great, i even suck up pee pee puddles that sometimes make their way under the litter boxes, i can take apart the whole thing and wash it… tubes, suction tube, exc. its great!!!

I use the chica5000. It takes care of the poop without fail!! It doesn’t clog but on the down side it doesn’t suck up the hay and it actually creates more fur.  It’s kind of loud too, sometimes it makes almost a barking noise.

 

 

 

My little dog (chica) has developed a taste for rabbit poop…..GROSSSS!! Between lola eating the litter itself and my dog eating the rest I won’t have to worry about emptying the litter pan, I’ll just refill it regularly!!

LMAO!!!!!

i was watching House Hunters last night and this couple at the end, they had a Boxer puppy they had gotten (bought from a breeder, no doubt… :o\ ) and so last night, i kid you not, i had a dream that we adopted an identical Boxer puppy… kinda weird. i put it in an xpen next to the bunnies… lol.

but i think a “dog vacuum” requires much more upkeep than a 500 dollar vacuum…
