Hi, just wanted to check how much my bunny should weigh. i think she’s ment to weigh 2kg but she weighs 2.7kg.

she is a female, 2yrs old, spayed, dwarf lop big in size, and quite fluffy

if i pat her down the back i can feel her spine. if i gently feel her sides i can feel her ribs. she has a dewlap, because i only got her spayed recently.

please can some one tell me how much their bunny weighs or something?

        thanks.

It’s hard to tell with lops sometimes because they can look tubby. If you can feel her spine then she’s probably an ok weight. You should be able to feel the ribs, even in fat bunnies. After the ribs end, there should be a small indentation – the waist. If it bulges out here, then a diet may be in order. Again, it’s harder to see that indentation with lops because their bodies are compact. Weight guides are not always the way to assess them as often bunnies are mixed breed. She may be just a larger dwarf lop. She may lose some of her dewlap yet. I doubt your vet would have performed a spay if she was greatly overweight as it’d be too risky.

It’s not possible for us to really gauge your bun’s weight b/c we haven’t seen her. Your best best will be to speak with your vet and see if he has concerns. If she’s slightly overweight, a change in diet and some more frequent playtime should be able to fix the problem.

Thanks! she is pretty big, not fat so i think shes ok. i read that some dwarf lop bunnies can get to 2.4kg and i think her weight is reducing slightly, so ill keep her out in her pen.

she was on a bit of a mope after her op and not her hoppy self so now she is exercising she is getting fitter. ill get her back on the scales soon so i can see any more signs of weight loss. also i read that past the ribs are ment to be sloping slightly inwards… if i can get past the fluff i’ll check up on this.

                C ya later!

Just remember that not all buns fall into the ideal weight for their breed. They can definitely be bigger or smaller, so I would talk to your vet instead of taking the breed standard as the absolute for what her weight should be. Being under her ideal weight, even if it falls into the breed standard ideal weight, could be dangerous for her health.

Lops are tricky too because they look very solid. Sometimes my guy looks fat, others he looks thin – I know the times he looks chubby to me are just because he’s a lop and is built like a little bulldog. I don’t worry about his actual weight and just watch him for any changes and trust my vet to tell me if he’s at a healthy weight.

The advice above is all excellent.

I am afraid I can’t tell if it’s a good weight because I am an archaic American who only knows pounds.

ps. all you guys have been so helpful. i havent been able to get on here for ages because of us building and the internet being down, so thank you so much. my goal is to get butsies down to 2.5kgs at least. then we’ll se how she’s doing and go from there.

I love that bunny so much, i would dread her to devolp some problem because of her weight.

                        ps.
Should my bunny still have a dewlap?
she got spayed when she was 1 & 1/2

i dont want anything bad for her.

Lots of females have dewlaps, especially when spayed later than a year old. I wouldn’t worry about that. It’s really hard to tell from pics if she’s overweight or not, especially because she’s a lop and they always tend to look stocky. Has she seen a vet? I would trust a vet’s opinion on whether she’s overweight or not.

She’s very cute! Love her color.
