Kyoto has dry flakey skin in areas along his back, it’s something i notice when i brush him, and more so when he is molting. He’s one of those bunnies that drops whole areas of fur at one time leaving little almost bald spots. He also has very thick fluffy coat.

Just wondering what others do to stop flakey skin?
When i had a partially paralyzed bunny she wasn’t able to groom herself in areas making her skin dry and flakey, i would give her shelled natural sunflower seeds as treats as they have a natural oil that suposedly help skin and coats. They are also fatty, and well Kyoto’s good in that department, he dosn’t need anymore fat.

have you tried using the barrier ointment that you mentioned using on one of your others in the past for urine burn?

I think bag balm is safe for use on rabbits, is this what you used?

I use it very much too. It is OK to use on rabbits so I would try it for the flakey skin, Andi.

It’s so greasy/sticky I would have no clue how to get it to his skin without shaving him. Thinking about his fur and bagbalm is icking me out LOL, what a mess. lol
Ebony was shaved and so I would apply it to those areas only.

I’ve heard of people putting vegtable oil in their cats food for dry skin. ???

You should never give a rabbit vegetable oil. I used the balm on an unshaven rabbit for urine burn; and if you think it might help your rabbit, wouldn’t it be worth it, gross as it may be? You wouldn’t need very much. dampen and moisten the area with a warm damp cloth first to help distribute the balm, the dampness will make it a little less sticky. Don’t use too much. — have you asked your vet about the flakey skin?

We didn’t get into the skin last time i was there for those huge lumps in his dewlap.
I have used it for urine burn on shelter bunnies as well, but ‘under’ the bunny is a lot less hair then on top LOL. I will try wetting the area and then working it down in tiny amounts, that sounds less messy… I have this picture in my mind of this greasy hairball bunny and me covered in it as well LOL
Maybe i can work it through with a dampend comb and comb it through as well.

I have kinda a funny update.
Kyoto has been getting groomed so often by my Jersey Wooly, who’s usually a eye/ear licker but with Kyoto he’s been grooming his back SO MUCH! and… the flackey skin has reduced so much!
Kyoto can’t reach back there very well, so i guess all he needed with an obcessive grooming friend LOL I’m now deciding if i try and bond the two groups to make a group of 5 since those two have become good little grooming buddies during playtime
