Dosage for Simethicone?

Bernard is having some more gas issues. I bought “Little Remedies Gas relief drops” but I’m having trouble with the correct dosage. The syringe they gave me goes up to 0.6 mL, I gave her 0.9 mL. I read this “Pediatric Simethicone 1cc (20mg/ml suspension) can be given orally as often as every hour for 3 hours and then 1cc every 3-8 hours.“ 1 cc is 1.0 mL, right? Or did I under dose her?

1 cc is the same as 1 mL, so that sounds correct to me!

You also don’t need to worry about overdosing with simethicone either. It is virtually harmless and is commonly given as the 1st line of defense when suspecting gas! 3/4 to 1 full syringe is typically what I give as a dose.

Ok thank you! At what point do I need to take her to the vet? She hasn’t eaten since last night. I have critical care, should I syringe feed her?

If your rabbit hasn’t poo’d or eaten in 12 hours, it is an emergency and she needs to be taken to the vet.  How long ago was “last night”? How long ago since she last ate / poo’d?

The last I have seen her eat was over 12 hours ago. She pooped one last night, I’m not sure what time.

It’s good that she pooped, but she should eat. I would try and get some critical care in her as well as some water. Do you have a vet you can get to at this time ?

Are her ears cold? It would be good to keep her temperature up as well. I actually went through a very bad gas episode with one of my rabbits two nights ago, and I was fortunate that he started eating and pooping again right before we could call the vet office when they opened. I noticed he would get cold fast, so I would pet him occasionally and also set up a heat lamp in his pen.

Do you have any canned pineapple? Pineapple can help break down fur and things that may be disturbing the GI tract. I know some people cite information saying pineapple doesn’t work, but it has been 100% in the three instances of major gas for one of my rabbits.

I do have a very good vet I can call. I was just going to wait another hour because that’s when the meds are supposed to kick in. She’s been drinking on her own fine.  I’ll try the critical care. I’ll try the pineapple too, thanks

Yes I would give critical care and a tummy rub ASAP, and get her to the vet if she doesn’t perk right up. If it is just gas it should resolve quickly, but the pain and lack of appetite from it can cause stasis to set in.

I just gave her some critical care and she basically ate it herself (I didn’t have any pineapple) I think she pooped. I found three or four poops on her bed and I’m 90% sure it was clean before. I’m going to wait a little longer to see if she poops anymore

It’s great that she ate the critical care herself and she has been pooping. While that doesn’t mean the worry is over, that’s a great sign.

I worried about giving her a tummy rub because she was spayed a couple weeks ago and I don’t want to hurt her

No more poops so far. I’m thinking of calling the vet now. What do you think? I have a history of calling the vet when it’s not necessary, I’m prone to panicking 🤪

I would call the vet. Since she was just spayed, she may need more pain meds and supportive care. They may be able to give you pain meds without seeing her but will be able to advise. It could be that she just needs more syringe feeding and pain management.

Keep giving her critical care, especially since she is eating it on her own. The more food and moisture you can get into her the better.

So I called my vet and their rabbit vet isn’t in today. I’ve also called 8 other vets around me and none of them can see her. I’m not really sure what to do

I found a vet, they are giving her fluids,  and doing xrays. They don’t have staff staying overnight but they still want to keep her over night. I’m scared if I leave her, she will be too nervous to poop. What do you guys think?

That’s a possibility and unfortunately I don’t have too many thoughts since I can’t see her or interact with her. My initial thought is what they would do overnight if they don’t even have staff overnight? If you’re able to give her that attention and care, you may be better equipped than they are, in addition to any medication that can give you and being in a setting she knows already.

This isn’t my normal vet, so I’m not sure if this is a great vet. They said they want to keep her overnight because they want to give her injectable meds first thing in the morning.

They did an X-ray and said there isn’t anything blocking, it’s just gas. I opted to bring her home because I think she’ll do better at home.

 Sorry, one more question. The vet said to give her critical care every 8-10 hours but last time she had GI issues we had to feed her every 2-4 hours. Which one is better? Also she said she gave her 1 of the three meds she gave me but I forgot which one and now they are closed. Not sure what to do about that…

I cant speak to the meds, as I’m not familiar with them unfortunately.

If there is no blockage, then theres no harm in getting some food in her. I dont think theres any ironclad dosing, as the rabbit will eat varying amounts depending on how it feels. Since she hasn’t eaten very much, I’d try to give her more than less without stressing her too much.

She did eat a little cilantro and some apple but not very much. Now she looks like she might be in pain but I just can’t remember if they already gave it to her.  I really don’t want to over dose her but I also don’t want her to go 24 hours in pain

This might not be relevant anymore since I’m guessing you were able to call the vet, but which medications did she give you? Typically pain meds are once a day (but some vets will do twice a day), and motility meds are more frequent.

She gave us Cisapride, Metoclopramide for motility every 8-12 hours, I believe. And Meloxicam every 24 hours. I couldn’t get ahold of the vet but she seemed to be feeling fine. She was walking around and eating so I didn’t give her any pain meds.

She’s doing really well right now. I could hear her eating all last night and she pooped quite a bit too. I’m really glad I didn’t leave her at the vet overnight

I think her GI tract is starting to slow down again. Yesterday there were less poops and she wasn’t eating as much. I gave her some more simethicone and when I woke up there were a good amount of poops. She’s still eating but her appetite is definitely slowing down. I really don’t want her to go into stasis again. Is there anything I can do?

Now I think she’s just protesting her regular food and all she wants is the critical care. She happily gobbles down all the critical care I give her, but everything else she eats sparingly. My vet recommended going to a feed store and getting a bale of hay, that she might like it better because it’s fresh. Any other ideas?

I agree some fresh hay might help. If she wants critical care, for sure keep giving it. 🙂 It has lots of beneficial things for the gut. Stasis can have some “fits and starts”, but critical care can help a lot.

I know you were having some issues with her diet early on. What veggies is she currently getting?

She’s gotten a little better at eating hay but her diet is still mostly veggies. She gets dandelion leaves, lemon leaves, and grape leaves. Occasionally I’ll give her Romaine lettuce. I’m hoping once I get the fresh hay that she will like that.

I’ve also just read online about bladder sludge. Ever since I’ve had her, her urine has had white in it. Every once in a while I see her peeing, but only a little comes out. It’s never super thick though. Is that something they can just giver her antibiotics and she’ll be ok?

Some calcium coming out in the urine is ok, but if it is a thick sludge, or if she is straining to pee and nothing is coming out, that could mean she has stones and is in pain. She may need medical treatment if that’s the case. That would also be a potential cause for stasis if she is in pain from that.

Try removing her bedding from her litter box and just put hay, then try to see when she pees next how it looks.

Dandelion is high in calcium, so you might eliminate that for now or reduce it to see if that helps. I’m not sure about the calcium content of lemon or grape leaves. I would try to up the amount of romaine.

She’s going to the vet soon to be treated for EC so I’ll talk to the vet about it then. I’m in the process of litter box training her but I guess she thinks one of her beds is a litter box and she just goes on that. So I can see it pretty clearly. It’s white and not as thin as water but not thick either. If I were to rub a Q-tip over it I don’t think anything would come off. Good to know about the dandelion, I’ll have to go pick up some more romaine.

All the reviews were great but because Bernard is so picky, maybe the fresh hay from a feed store is better? Or is the hay here fresh too?

My bunnies love the oat hay from the BB store. 🙂 So I would imagine the timothy is also great (there are probably some reviews for it too). You might try getting timothy and one other variety to see if she likes another type better.

I picked up some Orchard hay and she’s been snacking on it all day, I’m so glad she’s finally eating hay 🙂 I’ll have to try the oat hay here too

So she was doing better but today she seems to be slowing down. She’s eating enough but has only pooped maybe 15 normal sized poops all day. I gave her some simethicone this morning and some guy motility meds. Is there anything I can do? I don’t have any pain meds left.

Yeah, I do have a syringe and critical care but she will eat the critical care by herself off of a plate. She has eaten some hay today, a lot of lemon leaves, and 4 large leafs of romaine. Should I still syringe feed?

Ive read a few things online, some places say baby aspirin is ok some say it’s not. I’m worried if she’s in pain she won’t poop.

I have another app where I can ask a vet questions. So I asked about the aspirin. He said it was fine so I gave it to her. I won’t give her anymore and I regret giving it to her (it was 1/4 of an 81 mg) I just couldn’t take seeing her in pain. She’s doing a little better now. She’s still eating on her own and she pooped 10 more. I think we’re on the right track 😁
