My daughter is home from school today and so she fed the dogs and didn’t pick up the dog food bowl afterwards.  Drue went over to Sammi’s bowl and Sammi got upset and growled and went after Drue.  She didn’t break the skin and he hopped off and that was that, since Drue didn’t fight back she didn’t really bite him, just kind of mouthed him.  I checked Drue over and he is ok but he’s really scared.  He’s in his condo and he won’t move or eat.  I tried everything..papaya, pellets, hay, mint, turnips..all that are his favorite.  It’s only been a little bit though so I think it’s just that he’s too upset to eat right now.    Is there anything I can do to help him?  To make him less scared? Or should I just leave him alone.  The dog is outside right now..where she will be for a long while and then I’ll be making her go upstairs.  In the future we’re just going to make sure that the food bowls are picked up before Drue comes out..I didn’t even think about it because I always pick them up after they’re done but since I didn’t feed them I wasn’t paying attention.

Poor poor Drue..I feel so bad.

Should I take him to the vet anyway??? There is no cuts on him but what if she broke a bone or something?  Would he not be hopping normally if she had???  I don’t really see how she could have..if her grip was strong enough to do that it’d surely have broken the skin right???

I feel so horrible…I was stupid to think they were ok near each other..it’s just they’ve never been around her food before..Sammi is a great dog but she’s territorial about food.  When I first heard her growling I thought she was fighting with Elphie..someitmes they play and Elphie bites her in play and Sammi gets upset and bites her back.  But then I saw Elphie not near Sammi and my heart sank.  I was imagining Drue IN her mouth or something.  Thank god it doesn’t look like that was the case..he’s just a little wet from slobber.  Tucker is in there grooming him through the bars.  I wonder if she knows he’s scared.  She’s being really attentive to him right now.  Wonder if it’s in a nice way or mean way…

My poor Drooby Drueberson   I’m gonna go give him more pets.  I hope that’s helping him and not making him more scared.

          OMG he’s bleeding.

Underneath his nose he’s bleeding.  And Mike just told me we have no gas and no money in the account.  Crap!  What do I do????  Is there something that I can do for him until morning?  Something i can put on him?  It seems like it’s FROM the nose..that’s really bad I’m thinking.  OMG..I don’t know what to do.

I dunno! Is there any way you can get to a vet? Bunnies often don’t survive the night if there’s something major wrong. Borrow money? If it’s from the nose then I’d say it could be urgent…he may have a broken bone or internal bleeding…

Have you gotten him out to look at him? This doesn’t sound very good…he must be in pain if he is just sitting there and won’t eat.

I’ve been able to look at him, I can see that there is some kind of bleeding under his nose.  It’s not dripping and it’s not flowing or anything but I can see where there is some blood there.  He’s moving around the cage but he still won’t eat anything.  It’s been about 20 minutes at this point.

I don’t know what to do.  I can cash bonds in the mornng to take him but I can’t do that since the bank is closed right now.

Can you clean around his nose area to see if he’s injured? Is it coming from him nose?

I tried with a wet washcloth, it’s coming from the side of his nose..doesn’t appear to be from inside the nose.  I didn’t get anything on the washcloth..so I am assuming it’s not very much and what is there is dried or in the hair?  He has dark hair there so it’s hard to see and he is not so happy about me prodding around.

I just don’t know what to do until morning.  In the morning I can figure something out..I can cash the bonds, get him to the vet and everything but I can’t do that until then because it’s late already.  The vet is an hour and a half away so noone is going to drive me there.

Oh and I’m trying to do this by myself because Mike is working and he came downstairs but thinks that it’s just a scratch and that he’s fine and so he won’t come down and help me because he thinks I should just leave him alone so that he can calm down.

I would watch him very carefully then and keep him confined and keep him warm so he does not go into shock until you can get him to the vet or see how he does later.

Maybe you can just sit with him and pet him, maybe make soothing noises so he does calm down. If he calms down he may eat something…or he may let you have a better look at him.

Ok he’s in his condo, how should I keep him warm?  I can put something over him but I don’t know if he’ll stay under it.  I have a heating pad but I don’t know if that is safe.

How would I know if he is going into shock??

                            I’m so scared.

He might be better once the kids go to sleep.  He sometimes acts like he is right now when they’re down here anyway.  So if he’s scared too that might be what is going on.

I’m just so scared and I want to take him to the vet right now..they’re closed anyway and I know the emergency vet won’t see him and bill me for it.

Don’t be scared. I do agree that you might just want to start by letting him calm down – he can probably sense your worried and fretting over him. You just might want to keep him out of any drafts if there are any and continue watching him without watching over him to see what happens.

Can rabbits have peppermint tea??  It’s just peppermint in it.  I have some and the bunnies always try to drink it..maybe if I gave him some in a dish he’d drink it???  I’d feel better if he’d at least drink something.

I would give him anything like that. He may not drink anything right now – just keep some fresh veggies out for him to help entice him.

I think tea has caffeine too and that isn’t something you want to give a rabbit – it’s probably more the mint that attracts him – do you have some fresh mint?

Yea it’s just mint in it..it’s herbal tea and the only ingredient is peppermint.

I do have fresh mint though..I tried giving him that and he goes and sniffs it but won’t eat..which is what is worrying me.

It hasn’t been that long but Drue never refuses food…ever.

He won’t eat the fresh peppermint though? When did the attack happen…he may still be trying to calm down too.

Is he walking? He’s not limping or acting like he’s in pain that way is he? I would check him over again especially around the area where he was bleeding just to make sure that you didn’t miss any possible injuries.

Yea, it’s celestial seasonings and it’s just peppermint..he won’t eat the regullar peppermint…

oh he’s moving around now! He just went from his second level to his third and is sitting over near where Tucker is now.  He still hasn’t eaten anything but he hopped around without it being to get away from me.

I’m going to steep some peppermint leaves in some hot water instead.  Then by the time they’re cool they’ll probably have flavored the water….  I know the tea is just peppermint but who knows where the peppermint came from I guess… at least the stuff I have is organic and he’s been eating it for a week now with no problems.

I shut his condo door so that maybe he’ll feel more secure and I am trying to stay away from him because I don’t think he wants to be bothered.  He’s not like Tucker where he comes over to us regularly..so if he’s already scared me going over there might actually be bugging him.  He’s up by Tucker now and she’s sitting near him over on her side of the condo so maybe the company of her even through the condo wall will make him feel better.

He’s not limping that I can see..he’s just been in his condo though so there really isn’t much space to have any full speed hops or anything.  He can jump the levels just fine though and doesn’t seem to be having any issues.  He moves when I go over there..he clearly is not finding me a comfort right now so I am trying to leave him alone but keep an eye out on him.

There is no other bleeding besides the area by his nose…that I can see anyway..I’ve tried looking everywhere and I think I looked at everything but he’s not cooperative so I hope I haven’t missed anything.  Mike is still upstairs and thinks he’s fine so he won’t help me right now.  If he’s still acting this way later Mike will help me I am thinking.

The attack was about 4:45 I think, so less then an hour ago.

So, I am NOT a vet or a vet tech, but I work at an emergency vet clinic, and we almost *always* recommend bringing bunnies in to be seen, even if it seems like a little problem. The vet can examine, shave (if necessary) and clean any areas where skin was broken, provide preventative antibiotics, etc. When getting money ASAP is an issue, I usually recommend having people look into and apply for Care Credit. It is no interest under their promotional plan if you pay it off within three months, and *most* vet clinics accept it.
If you do go to the vet, make sure it is someone who is experienced with exotics (esp. buns), because I know a lot of emergency clinics/day clinics in my area (besides where I work) don’t see exotics on an emergency basis, and these guys really need special care!
Good luck! Sorry you and your bun have to deal with this 🙁

I’m sure that my vet will bill us..but she’s closed.  I know that the local emergency vet does NOT do any kind of billing and only accept major credit cards.  If I was sure he’d be ok til morning I’d feel a lot better but he won’t eat anything and he’s really worrying me.

He’s just SITTING there.  Well now he’s bun loafed..which makes me feel a little better..before he was just sitting and he doesn’t normally just sit.

Since it sounds like a vet visit tonight is not an option- I would recommend the following until you can get him into regular vet tomorrow- and I would still recommend reg vet tomorrow as at minimal he may have some bruising from being pinched in the dogs mouth which might be painful and at the very least the vet might give some pain meds.  Bruising might be more visible by tomorrow anyway.

                                                        1) Keep him quiet and restricted activity.   Even though we don’t want him to be too active- is something upsets him generally like the kids-keep them away from him so you can monitor his reactions to a quiet or soothing environment (or at least what environement he prefers- kids, no kids, TV, no TV, etc).  Even if he is used to the dogs- I would keep them away in case he is fearful tonight.  Even if the other dog is fine with him- he might associate one dog with the other dog (I think you have 2 dogs).  Try to situate him so that everything he needs is available- water, food, litter without having to jump.  Use a smaller litterbox temporarily if you have to (cardboard box with litter and hay).  But only make these changes calmly in his cage if you think he will not stress about it.

                                                        2) Keep him warm- but DO NOT use a heating pad unless you feel he is critically ill, letharic and cold (you would need to take temp).  Heating pads can get way too hot, and we do not want him to get overheated.  Even when a pet is in severe shock and cold (low temp) we never use heating pads above “low” at our vet clinic.  Shock can interfere with the bodies ability to regulate temp- so do not take a chance of overheating him, let along the electrical cord issue with bunnies.  Heating pads can cause burns on pets- it takes a few weeks for the burns to come thru- but they can cause  tissue damage and scarring.  So I would rule out heating pads at this point, just make sure he has something warm and comfy to rest on.   You can also provide 20oz or 2 liter Pop bottles filled with hot water for some heat.  Just be sure to take them out after they reach room as when they get cold- they are then chilly.  I would not cover his body if he is not used to it- it may scare him.

Try to be calm around him- I know that you will want to monitor him- but on the other hand you want him to be able to calm down and return to more normal bunny behavior as soon as possible.

I can’t really recommend doing anything for the spot between his nose/mouth to get him more comfortable.  There is nothing you can apply topically that I can think of that will help since the area is furry.

Since it is no longer bleeding- there is nothing that needs to be done about that.

If you want to offer him something to drink later- pedialyte might tempt him, I think most rabbits take it well since it is sweet.  But I would not worry about that yet unless you do not have access to stores that are open late.

SInce there was blood in the vicinity of his mouth- I would be hesitant to think about force feeding anthing or even syringe feeding pedialyte.  If his jaw or sinuses are injured that will only be more painful.  (I know you have not mentioned forcefeeding).  Also if you vet can get him in tomorrow am that is only a little over 12 hours since the time of injury.

Also I know it is hard to think that he might be in pain- but do not give any over the counter pain meds- even if you find a dosage for bunnies for aspirin or tylenol- without knowing what injuries he might have it could make things worse.  Aspirin is a blood thinner and would be too dangerous to use without knowing what is going on, and other OTC meds can be hard on the gut.

Oh my! What a crazy thing to have happen.

On keeping him warm…. a way I found that you can actually heat up the air and not have a hot pad around is your hair dryer. You know how hot it makes your bathroom? You can run it on a low setting and low heat for half an hour and it will really heat the room up. The noise may be a conern if your bun is jumpy for those kinds of things.

I have the big dog upstairs and the little one is over here on the couch sleeping.  He’s in the condo,  I sent the older two kids upstairs and the littlest one is laying down on the couch quietly.  He’s semi bun loafed right now but kind of laying down.

I put a litter box on the floor that he was on before and he jumped to the other level.   He has water available on each level and food too.   He just won’t eat or drink anything

You sound so frightened and worried. Can you hold Drue and coo and sooth him without him getting upset. That would probably help some.  Oh the ears.  yes you can stick your finger on his ears and see if they are warm or cool.  If cool then you could perhaps hold him and put a blanky over his house.   He might like that, that way he can feel secure and sheltered from whats outside his house.

I know you really are concerned and want to bring him to the vet.  Try to calm down and not be so tense. Be gentle and cooing and pet Drue. He will more than likely appreciate the attention and feel some better and start to relax. Then you can let him know you are nearby but not prodding at him. I know you want to so bad to see if anything else is wrong. Once he has calmed you could try to explore him again.

HE sounds stuffy oh gosh. The hours are so slow when you need them to hurry by.

Is there a way to make the pellets mushy? I think he’d eat them if they were mushy…I think his mouth is still bothering him.

Use a wooden spoon to mush them up) then put some warm water in them and you’ll have a slurry. You can also add the crushed pellets to the baby food too.

Just be careful not to give him too many sweets, I know that you are happy that he is eating as that is a good sign- but you don’t want to have him develop a case of poopy butt, especially since he might be put on meds.  It sounds as though he wants to eat and will eat- so continue to monitor but don’t make it too easy for him to turn up his nose at nonsweetened foods.

I am really happy that he was able to jump and will eat, and that his congestion sounds better after sneezing a time or 2.  Even if he seems great in the am I would really recommend taking him in to see the vet anyway- he is more likely to be sore 24-48 hours after the injury (like humans can be) and she can give him something to help that, take a good look at his nose, and give him a good feel to make sure she does not feel any tears in the body wall.  The vet will know what to check for- so I would not try to feel for yourself- even myself personally I would not subject the bunny to an prodding exam when I knew the vet would have to do it anyway.

Drue has always been a favorite of mine since you got him- so I will keep him in my thoughts!  And keep up updated!  I am a sucker for Lop bunnies- and his markings are at the top of my list too!  I know you have not been able to bond with him like you did Tucker, but I bet going thru this together will make you even closer- he obviously knows that you care for him and will pamper him.

He’s responding to be better in the last few hours, he’s been coming more alert when I go over there and his eyes are looking brighter.  I have a feeling I’ll be staying up late tonight or asking Mike if he can come work downstairs later so that Drue has some company.

He was laying down before though..actually laying down so that made me feel better.  I really really wish that he would jump in his litter box and eat some hay..I’d feel much better then.

(of course Alicia, since none of us are vets, we can only advise you to the best of our knowledge and may not have all the answers)

I am just so sorry for what you and Drue are going through. It’s good that he’s at least eating a little bit. Since bunnies can go into shock from being “scared”, he might have been scared almost to that point, (or even to that point – it’s impossible to know from here)and now his system is just trying to recover. If his temperature is really low, you could have a better idea of what is going on.

The good thing about rabbits though when it comes to cuts/wounds is that they have “valve” type of vein system (can’t remember the real term) where they have little shut offs throughout their veins so that they don’t continue to bleed. (though things can reopen, you normally don’t see a constant “flow”) But the bad part is that rabbits can form abscesses at cuts points so you will just want to make sure to keep an eye on it – hopefully the vet will give antibiotics as a prevention.

Sending healing vibes and peace vibes!!

                                                                                                  We’re back from the vets!

We saw a new vet today (our normal vet was doing surgeries this morning so we saw her associate) so I was a bit unsure of him but he seemed to know what he was talking about.

He said there is no lacerations on/in his nose and none in his mouth.  He thinks that it was a broken blood vessel which caused the bloody nose.  He checked his teeth and his jaw and said that everything was aligned and that his jaw was nice and firm..so nothing broken or dislodged.

They checked him all over and listened to his heart and lungs and said that everything sounded good and that he might have some bruising that is causing him to not want to chew much.  He advised I put everything..veggies, pellets, hay…into a blender for him for a few days until he feels well enough to really chew on things.

They did not give me antibiotics, they said that since there is no laceration there is nothing to get infected and they thought that antibiotics might do more harm then good because of the digestive tract.  He said if Drue is not back to normal in a few days or if he gets worse then they will re-examine and see if antibiotics are needed then.  He also did not give pain pills since he said that since Drue was more active today and more responsive and eating more that he was probably already feeling quite a bit better.

As we speak he is muching on some hay!  Some full hay!! I am so excited to see that.  I brought him up to my office today and he’ll be spending the day in here until I am done with work and then he’ll be in his condo until the kids’ bedtime..after that I’ll put the dogs upstairs and let him out in the living room for a while with me..I want to keep an eye on him and make sure nothing changes.

His nose is already looking a LOT better though..he’s been working hard to get it clean.

Thank you all for your well wishes and advice..it really helped me to calm down and keep a level head until we were able to get to the vets this morning!!

With all the pampering and hand feeding he got last night along with the next few days of special processed foods- Drue will be so spoiled!     He will probably expect all of his meals to come in a crystal bowl (like the Fancy Feast cat).

(A spoiled bunny is the only kind to have!)

Yea I love the whole office! And they had no problems just making a copy of our card and holding off on processing it until Friday..and they saw us first thing too.

The vet tech who handled him today too was not as skittish as the last one there, she was used to rabbits and had him semi tranced with no hassle so that the vet could look at his mouth and stuff.

Drue is now under his cardboard house, feet kicked back and lounging   I’m going to actually ask Mike if he can stay up here while he works later…with him not even chewing hay I think it’s safe to say he won’t really be going after the wires!  And Mike would be up here anyway incase he did..the wires are under the desk which is where our feet are so it’s an area Drue avoids anyway.  It’ll be nice and quiet up here though and then I’ll come get him to bring him downstairs when I bring the kids up for bed.  He seems comfortable in here because I have the baby gate up so the kids and dogs can’t get in here.

I finally feel like I can breathe again!

Mike was ok with him being up in the office with him til the kids go to sleep..so that’s good..it’ll be nice and peaceful for him.  I’m sure he really wants to get back down here though so that he can spend time in his condo and see Tucker.

I’m thinking of making him three piles of hay…one regular that I’ll put in his litter box..one that’s cut up into pieces like 1-2 inches long and then one that’s blended up with some veggies and pellets like the vet recommended.  He’s been eating some hay so I think it’s starting to feel better but maybe he’ll eat more if it’s only a few inches long…

I gave him some fresh whole veggies (cilantro, parsley and rosemary) this morning and he was actually able to eat them…even the sprig of rosemary!!  That to me says that his mouth must be feeling better…if he’s able to eat rosemary!  He is no longer a fan of the dogs at all…Elphie went over to his condo with me and he growled at her..and she wasn’t even the one who went after him.  She is annoying though..I’ll give him that.

His skin around his eye looks a little pink and the fur around it is pushed down.  The vet didn’t mention a problem with his eye yesterday so I am assuming it’s probably just a bit irritated by all the grooming he’s been doing to his face.  He’s been washing a lot more lately trying to get all the dried blood from his nose.  I’ll keep an eye on that incase we need to go back to the vet..but I think it’s probably just from all the extra washing..but his nose is looking clear again so he can probably ease up on that now.

I’m going to bring him back up to the office with me again today..give him another day of peace and quiet.  He rides up really well in the carrier so I know it doesn’t stress him out.  I just put the carrier up to his door and he hops right in like it’s a taxi cab.

I’m assuming he can eat hay now since he’s eating rosemary but today I’m going to put just a tiny bit in his litter box while he’s up here.  That way I’ll be able to tell if he’s eating it..I think I saw him a few times last night but it’s hard to guage how much he’s eating when it’s a whole big pile of it.

Last night he ate the pellet mixture that I made him..tonight I think I might just crush them up…with a hammer when they’re in a plastic bag..and jsut give them to him that way.  I’m pretty sure he could manage that at this point.

I still haven’t seen him drink water and it’s kind of hard to tell with his water dish if he’s been drinking much but he’s been peeing and it’s not sludgy so that means he’s hydrated enough right?

This morning he was waiting for me at his front door..which is what he used to always do.  After he was hurt I’d always find him just bun loafed on his main floor but this morning I was greeted by a fluffy grey nose saying “out please!”

He’s been lounging a lot more and he did a DBF yesterday which..my gosh I of course had to go interrupt because considering the events of this week I thought it was a REAL DBF!!  He was fine of course..but a bit perturbed that I interrupted his nap.

Well it’s time to go give them their breakfast..today will be a real test on how his mouth is because I asked Mike to buy me cilantro, parsley and endive since those are all thin but he got me celery instead of the endive.  So I’m going to chop it up into 1 inch strips like I always do but still that’s pretty crunchy so we’ll see how that goes!!
