My daughter took these pictures the other day because she was concerned about how Mimzy was lying in his cage. I have seen him do this pretty regularly, mostly before he was treated for his branhamella and I’m wondering if he’s taking this position because he’s being bothered by it again?
Does anyone else have a bunny who does his daily loafing in this position? Most buns I see on their bellies have their cute little foretoes pointedly together and underneath their breastbone area. Mimzy doesn’t appear to be in any distress, but to see his front legs splayed so far to either side of his body, you’d think he is on a rolling sea and is about to hurl his cookies. Perhaps he has an ear imbalance that is throwing off his equlibirum?
He moves about no problem though. I don’t see him tilting head or tumbling about.. Although he does crash down his ramp at night pretty loudly because I think it’s just getting too dark for him to see where he’s going well, even with the nightlight on. ![]()
Sorry the first one is a little dark. The flash catches those white pen bars and nothing else gets past the glare.![]()

Mmmm???? Hopefully others have seen it and it’s normal. With his resp issues though I understand your concern so it may warrent looking into further. Rumball sometimes has his front legs stretched way out in front of him and it looks kinda funny, but he keeps paws together. Not like Mimzy there. Maybe it helps him stay cool better?
Yeah, I was thinking he might be too warm. Anytime I try to place a pad under him to keep his little tootsies from getting callouses on them, he promptly snatches it up and starts tearing/chewing at it or ‘smoothing’ it with his front paws trying to push it out of the way. lolz. It’s the most hilarious thing. I’ll have to get video of it.
And then I’ll leave the window cracked open so he can get fresh air and the next thing I know, he’s sneezing again. >_< I just can't win!
Ive seen both Hammer and Lucy do that, but not regularly. They usually lay there heads down on the floor between there paws too, kind of like a dog would. They dont seem to do it for any particular reason, just randomly every once in awhile.
Monkey randomly does that, she’s cute as heck when she does ![]()
I catch my three laying like that occasionally, for no particular reason…
Thanks everyone!
Yeah, usually Mimzy does the dead bunny flop when he wants to rest, just flat out on his side with his upward facing eye wide open (he kind of twists into the position as he throws himself down) so when he sits like this, I kind of wonder what’s going on. Good to know other buns do it too.
To date I don’t think I’ve seen him put his face down on the floor much when he’s laying like this. And if he does the minute he sees me he’s up and scooting into his dark corner to avoid me. ![]()
Does your bun have something to lay on that isn’t a slippery surface?
One of ours has never been able to hold himself up on anything other than carpet, a towel, or a blanket. When he gets onto a slippery surface his legs skid out like that. That may be a factor in the problem.
You know Jessica, that is a really good idea. I hadn’t thought that, just because he doesn’t like anything soft in his cage, doesn’t mean he still doesn’t slide over the hard plastic floor.
I wonder what I can convince him to lay on. I buy lots of different mattresses and pads for animal cages, but he will have none of them. And I don’t want him chewing up what I give him and swallowing it, I’m terrified he’d block up from that. Towels or blankets just get shoved aside and Swiss cheesed.
What does everyone here use to keep a soft bottom on your bunny’s snooze area? And how often do you have to replace it? How is it secured?
We use a cotton rug like the kinds that they have at pier one or country stores. They are a little thick, so it is hard to swiss cheese those. Also, sometimes carpet outlets have carpet squares for a very cheap price. I would say if you are desperate, cardboard is less slippery than plastic.
I’ve always been a big fan of flat sea grass mats, as they are edible and healthy. I did get a cage liner at a pet store once that is kind of low pile sheepskin with a waterproof bottom to it that was recommended for pets that weren’t well or disabled and needed softness. In the cat aisle I think.
BB often says she uses fleece fabric. Carpet samples can be good, but a very low pile and tight weave, with natural color rather than dye.
Here’s what I think is happening:
Pip: pssst. Mimzy. you there?
Mimzy: Yea. What do you want?
Pip: She isn’t fussing. We need to do something or we won’t get any more extra pets and attention.
Mimzy: Like what?
Pip: I know. Lie down and stick your feet out funny. Farther. That’s good. It’ll make her crazy!
Mimzy: Will she give us treats?
Pip: sneeze twice. That should do it.
Fiver: I’m telling!
Lol Pam! They really do think like that though. Us bunny slaves have a hard life.
my shelby dose that but with her back feet kicked out all the way to never just her front and i use a fleece blanket for her i just fold it up real comfy lookin and lay it n there and she lays one it and has chewed a little but not enough to even tell unless u hold it up n light but she loves it she will nudge it so she can get in between layers sometimes too but good luck in figureing this out ! i know its hard sometimes to tell if there just doin something weird for a minute or there is something wrong
It’s funny, he will dig at the bedclothes when I have him out there, but he doesn’t try to eat them. And he rolls himself into a tight little ball and snuggle into my leg when he’s on the bed with me, probably because he feels exposed and wants to appear less noticeable. When he’s on the bed, I always put a puppy wee pad under whatever towel or covering I place him on, just in case he gets territorial. If he finds it (by digging) he eats it.
Pam, I used to give him the straw mats, They would be completely shredded in a day.
Fake lambswool is a favorite pee cloth. ^_^ He’s got all the angles covered!
Cardboard might work though. I should probably get him a shoebox half that he can go incognito in, that way he’s got barriers from drafts too. *nods*
Love the bunny conversation, btw! xD I just bet they’re thinking that. And probably some things we can’t repeat here. :X
Oh, Winston lays like that ALL the time. J and I joke that he is such a boy – while our little Kay is a total lady with her dainty paws sweetly together.
LOLZ! Oh! I never thought of that! *giggles* Oh my, do you suppose that’s it? He’s just ‘all man’? rotfl
Now I feel like I should put him in a little cowboy hat and get him some chaps! lol….That way he can mosey on over to Pippi and tell her, “Well howdy little lady!” (Even though he’s smaller than she is.)
What a mental picture!
Amelia and Henri lay like that all the time too – mostly in summer when they are hot, and usually at the same time their back feet are sprawled out too.
I think the Duke here looks cute that way.
that’s actually the only way my two buns lay down. superman style. but maybe it’s cuz they’re lionlops and have massive amount of fluffy chestfur. sometimes odang even lies down with her front paws AND hind legs spread apart. and sometimes rests her head over one paw too… hmm.

no worries ![]()
What!? This sort of loafing never happens in our house!!
(She actually has some pretty extreme variations of it when she’s REALLY sleeping. ;P )
MM – you’ve created a funny thread here with all these funny bunny loafs. Super Duke Mimzy and a roly Max puddle!
Lil Bit is so pretty! and Sian, more pics of Nori pleeease!!
Uh-oh, I think there’s an epidemic going around!

we to have nothing but hard floors throughout our house, There ideal for cleaning and lovly and cool for buny to lay on. But RICOH spends his days skatting around them.
our solution was to put a rubber backed mat in the bunny room, rubber backed means that it sticks to the floor and doesnt slide underfoot, saving us from skating when passing through his room and 2, the rubber backing makes it very easy to wash if he has any accicdents on it,Its very close to his cage so he just pops inside and uses his toilet.
As for laying he often takes differant nap positions 1 being just like photo above, and ive also noticed its as if he’s rocking himself to sleep,
another favourite place is in my sons old min armchair (photo of this will follow later when i manage to remember to take photo. Our favourite position that we love to see him in is below
.

i love those yoga bunny poses (Nori and crew)!!
I cannot paste the picture here like I used to be able to do . Drat. oh yi back to this problem agian. IT is too late for this.
Hm…think I’ve started something here I can’t finish…lolz.
Aw, all the bunnies look so cute! Mimzy has added a fashion fad to the board, whee! ^_^
And thanks everyone. You definitely helped put both my daughter’s and my minds at ease. ![]()
Hmpf stupid vista computers. I had to go to my desktop to get this posted.
The laptop was working fine. Now it won’t copy/paste. Oh yi. More problems. I shut off the firewall and windows security. Still won’t work.
Guess I have to call roadrunner again.
Anyway enuf of my gripping. however you spell that. So here is Cotton dozing with his feet sticking up lol. Rascal. I didn’t see any one else’s bunnies doing this. Don’t get jealous he only did it once in his 2 1/2 year life. lol ![]()
nope, BT mine have never done that!!
BT, that is a favourite of mine – Cotton with his legs sticking up. Hilarious!
OMG! ROTFL! BT you have made my day with that photo! I have never seen any of mine do that, what a special flop that must have been!
HOW in the world?? lolz….
My daughter and I have been laughing at Fiver lately. Every night the same thing, he gives his little stuffed toy apple a cuddle and then goes over like he’s been shot. It’s the funniest thing.
Since my eyes are going bad, I have her come in and read to me from her favorite books in the eves. Fiver has gotten to the point where, when she arrives, he gets into this position that tells us he’s ready for ‘storytime’. It is SO cute. I’ll have to get some video of it and then, if I’m smart enough to figure it out, I’ll try to post it here. ![]()
y’all are cracking me up I love the rabbit conversation and all the pics .
OH I finally figured out the comp problem. As long as I don’t install anything everything will work great . lol. OH well
I am glad this post got started. Very funny
