Most of the pellets at pet stores are kinda expensive and almost all of them have the little treats in it. After doing some research I found that pellets are only 15% or less(?) of a rabbit’s diet, so I’m starting to wonder if my rabbit really needs it. He gets enough nutrition from the veggies and hay and taking pellets away would cut costs as well. Pellets or no pellets?

Pellets are usually given to ensure the bunny gets enough nutrients, but there are bunnies who have gone pellet free as some bunnies have fragile little tummies that can’t handle it. In short, I think it is possible to go pellet free, but make sure that their diet consists of a variety of other suitable bunny-friendly foods to make up for it.

What types of vegetables are you feeding him?

I agree with Kurotta. Pellets are usually just considered a supplement. There are many people who don’t feed pellets because they aren’t 100% a necessity and there are people who don’t feed them because of tummy troubles. If you decide to go pellet free, make sure he’s eating plenty of hay and veggies and provide him with a wide variety of veggies as well.

Think of pellets as vitamin/mineral supplements. Does your bun get about a dozen different greens and vegetables every few days? Because that’s what it takes to ensure proper nutrient supply for your bun. Lots of buns go without pellets. Mine gets pellets only as a treat. But you need to make sure you’re feeding a very wide variety of fresh food and hays to guarantee proper nutrition.

My vet is of the opinion that large amounts of pellets do much more harm than good.
