does anyone have a completely free range bunny?

Do any of you leave your bunny out in the house if you aren’t home? On days I’m home HP’s cage door is open so he can go in and out as he pleases then he’s shut in his cage overnight and the days I’m at work (I only work part time) the room his cage is in is completely bunny proofed so he just roams around at will. I’ve been wondering if I should leave his door open while I’m at work or if he should have more supervision? He’s coming up on 3 months old (April 10) his litter habits are very good

I should mention his cage is a large dog crate with two floors he’s not shut in a tiny space

It depends on your home environment and your rabbit. If either have potential risks which could cause injury/harm, you’ll need to rabbit-proof and access its safety. Wick is 100% free-roam, whether or not anyone is home. The only place that stays shut when I’m gone is the bathroom. Wick also doesn’t chew on anything and only gets adventurous when someone’s there, so it was an easy choice. His environment is very low-risk as well.

I would not advise letting him free-roam around 3months, just because it could be the day you’re gone is when his hormones kick in and he may start spraying and chewing a lot more if those behaviors affix to him. You can try trial periods of going shopping for an hour, then two hours, etc. if you’d like as well.

A lot of people have bunnies free range on here. I can’t because they aren’t bonded just yet. But if you can bunny proof the whole house then he should be fine. Covering up baseboards with baby gates or something like that, extra litter boxes, covering up or hiding/unplugging all cords, and just removing anything dangerous, and it would be totally okay.

He is at that age where he might start losing his litter habits from hormones, just in case you start finding poos scattered all over the place or pee in places you normally wouldn’t. Hence why the extra litter boxes. My boys used to spray in like 2 particular areas, so I put the extra boxes there and haven’t had a problem since. They’re not bonded yet, as I said, so I’m always sweeping up those territorial poos xD

My rabbit is free-roam in my bedroom 24/7, and has access to the hallway/kitchen/bathroom of my tiny apartment although he doesn’t often venture in there & I always watch him if he does.

I started by having him in his cage when I was out of the house or at work, and letting him out when I came home. Then I started little experiments where I left him out of the cage if I was just popping to the shops or going somewhere briefly. I remember how nervous I was the first day I left him out the cage whilst I was at work! Luckily my housemate was there & sending me photos of him ;P then it gradually went from there. Now he doesn’t even have a cage anymore – I know my bedroom is completely bunny proofed and he mostly sleeps during the day, so he can’t come to any harm.

I bunny proofed my whole house, and let the range where they will. They prefer the living room and kitchen, so that’s where they stay. (I literally got down to rabbit level to look for things that needed securing.)
Aside from some carpet being torn up and some minor baseboard chewing, they’ve been fine. And since the carpet in my place is from 1983 (Yeah, yuck.) And comes up every time I vacuum, no great loss.

Yes mine are completely free roam, morning day and night. The only time they were caged was at the very beginning and during the bonding process, but it wasn’t for very long and the enclosed area was adequate.

Mine are free roam! The only time I put them in their cage is at bed time. They love to jump up on the bed with us and I’m scared that one of us would role over on them or else they would free roam 24/7. At such a young age, I would stick with supervised roam only. We didn’t start the free roam process with our bunnies until a month or two after they were spayed and neutered and their hormones calmed down. And before you let them free roam- bunny proof EVERYTHING! We had to buy outlet covers because my doe would try to lick the inside of them??‍♀️. Nothing is safe with a determined bunny!
