HI! I was wondering does anyone own a belgian hare on BB? If you do are they good pets? I have read that they are fragile and have special diet needs?? Probably the same as other rabbits, but was just wondering
i have always wondered if anyone has ever kept a hare? a friend of my cousins used to have one in her back yard but i was only about 6 so i never knew much about it, be interesting to know i will keep an eye on this post!
Belgian hares aren’t really hares.
They’re domestic rabbits bred with wild rabbits, I believe.
I was wondering about that…! Because hares and rabbits aren’t actually the same thing, right? They’re on slightly different branches of the lagomorph family-tree, arent they?
ive been wondering about the same thing!!! My husband LOVES the look of the hares body but i havnt found any real info on them… i thought i had a hard time getting info on EL lol
I don’t think you can actually breed a hare and a domestic rabbit but I’m not an expert at these things.
I believe this breed just has characteristics of a “hare” which is why it is called a Belgian Hare.
I’ve never seen one in person or known of anyone who has had one. They do look lovely.
Yeah, Adee, I did a google search out of curiosity and got a couple random websites intended for children about “rabbits are born with closed eyes and no fur, hares are born with open eyes and fur” sort of info. I didn’t look TOO hard, though…
I found this info on a web page:
Belgian Hare
Size: 6-9.5 pounds
This rabbit has a lean racy body that looks more like a hare’s than a rabbit’s. However, despite its name, it is indeed a rabbit and not a hare. The breed did not originate from hare. This is a popular European breed. The flanks and ribs are well tucked up. The erect ears are thin and fine. The head sits on a slender neck and is narrow. The fur tends to be stiff and close. Belgian Hare has a slightly longer tail than most rabbits have.
Its standup position, together with an alert expression, make this one the most spectacular of all rabbit breeds. No other breed possesses as much fascination for the out-and-out fancier as does the Belgian hare. This is the race horse of the rabbit family.

Along with this photo, wow, that rabbit can really suck it in….lol. Looks like a supermodel holding her stomach in….
What a cool looking rabbit! Just beautiful.
Holy cow, it looks like a caricature! Or an art deco drawing (maybe it just reminds me of the drawings of the woman with the afghan hounds…also very slender and curvey!)! Good luck catching that bun if he doesn’t want catching!

I was looking around the page I posted above with the Belgian Hare info and noticed under the menu, there was not only “rabbits for sale” but a button titled “Inappropriate Elimination”. Yikes, I was afraid to look, but it turned out just to be about bunnies peeing outside of the litter box, inappropriately…heheh
Hahaha! Kralspace! That’s funny!
I’ve seen a few belgian hares on Bunspace before. =3

They are BEUATIFUL. But I don’t know HOW you’re supposed to maintain a bunny like that -in addition to it being REALLY fast, it’s REALLY long! And unlike other bigger bunny breeds, it doesn’t have the mass to back up its…logn-ness. I would be terrified of breaking its back or something if I tried to hold it down for a vet exam or a nail trim!
No kidding, I wonder how looong they are if they stretch out instead of arching up like that?
I don’t mean to be shallow…but I don’t really like what they look like. Maybe they’d grow on me if I ever met one…but judging by the picture I’d never seek one out.
They are beautiful!! (It’s ok tank people have opinions ;-).) I think they were bred to hares and a domestic rabbit a LONG time ago! I love the look of them! I guess maybe it’s cause I love greyhounds too and they’re both long and skinny! I know someone on another forum who owned one 8 years. She said he was 9 lbs and people always thought he was a mini dog!! She really loved him! I want to find out more about them, but can’t find any thing!!!
don’t feel bad. they’re not really my style either… they absolutely deserve the same love and care as any other bunny, but to each their own, right? ![]()
I agree with then They kinda look as though the havent had enough to eat and to much exercise, I like the smaller chunkier breeds….no offense there pretty in there own way ya know.
I feel the same as when I see an emu.. beauty, amazement… but not so much feeling like I want to snuggle.
i am pretty sure regular and domestic bunnys cant be bred together, basically because there genetics have change to cope with being stuck in a cage and whatever that it would be like breeding a cat and a dog. I did hear this on a documentary but also i read it online, could be a load of BS lol but it seems to make sense.
I think that is probably one of those each to their own buns, although i didnt really like lionheads when i first seen them but now they are my FAV breed hehe
There are also some better pictures, that looks to be more of a professional ‘breed’ picture than a real life one.

It’s rather interesting looking, but it doesn’t quite have that long almost deerlike face that real hares do that completes the look and gives them that sort of graceful majestic style. I love cuddling my little pudgy bunny really.
i do love that pic of the babies tho! lol. i think we’ve had this discussion before. wild bunnies and domestic bunnies are different sepcies altogether, so they cannot mate.
Huh…speaking of Belgian Hares…here are some for sale.
Gosh they are gorgeous! I just love looking at them.
wow, squueeezzzee, what a group of cuties
Awwwww!!! They look so cute!! And big!!
i think they are much cuter in a ‘natural’ state than in that ‘breed’ photo up top.
