Do female rabbits….

Do female rabbits have the bald spot on each side of thier genitals like the males do? I think Bella may be a boy. The vet felt there and didn’t feel any testicles but he also didn’t look at it too much. I always thought she was a girl because she had the slit. Well, now, she looks more like a he! It really pokes out there when you press there.

If she’s a he, at some point you will not be able to mistake it. If s/he gets excited, it will show. How old is Bella now? They both look like slits until the testicles drop or the penis is erect. Usually you know pretty easily that it’s a boy after a certain age and the hormones kick in. A girl may make you wonder longer, because nothing will change as dramatically until the vet finds out at the speuter. Not sure about the bald spot, but it’s possible.

Did the vet check the sex also? It’s possible. Boys and girls are easily mixed up. Happens very often.

Bella is around 3 1/2 months old now. I couldn’t believe how far it poked out. Baxter didn’t even poke out that far.lol I know, it’s gross. I’ve been wondering if Bella was a boy or girls since I got her. The Vet felt to see if “she” had testicles and didn’t feel anything. Then again, that was a while ago and “she” is still pretty young. He didn’t really look at her private too closely so he probably wouldn’t have noticed too much. She is losing her litter habbits a little now. Which tells me that “she” is maturing. She is also not free roam at all now due to her starting to get destructive. I am assuming she is going to be getting altered soon. I really thought I saw testicles. It looked very similar to Baxter before he descended. I am really thinking that I have 2 boy bunnies. Will that make it more difficult to bond them when they are altered?

It shouldn’t make a difference, male to male bonds can work well. Of course, don’t put them together until you sure-sure of the sex. Best wait until both are fixed. Has Baxter been fixed now?

Visuals can help and maybe can confuse further….but take a look at these links that help demonstrate some of the differences in the sexes. In young rabbits (like in the 1st link) they can look very similar. Once thing to note is the distance between the anus and vagina versus anus and penis. It’s closer in Does than in Bucks though it probably varies rabbit to rabbit so it’s not the best clue in the world. You’ll notice in the close up of the Doe it does show some bare skin along side the genital mound. This is where the scent glands are though. http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/s…hp?t=46514  

In the 2nd link, the video shows a buck directly after neuter. The vet shows the empty sacks then the rabbits penis. You’ll notice the scrotal sacks are actually forward of the genital mound and penis. I think it’s clearer in this video as the bunny is older. http://www.youtube.com/user/Velvete…ObnMJNYoSo  

Hope this helps some but absolutely get your vet to give the final verdict. Bella could become Bill. Baxter and Bill has a nice ring to it. ;o) but she/he could stay as Bella too.

If you’re going to accidentally end up with two same sex buns, male-male is definitely preferable over female-female in regards to bonding. Even if she is a he, they should bond well.

Thanks so much! I will definetly check those out! I absolutely wouldn’t put them together until a few weeks after they are altered! They aren’t even in the same room. Maybe I am seeing the scent glands rather than testies. Hmmm…I will check that out to make sure. Baxter is getting neutered next Thursday. Bella won’t for a couple more months since she is too young. My daughter got really upset when I told her that I thought Bella might be a boy. lol She said she doesn’t like boys. Although she loves Baxter. So Bella will stay Bella whether “she” is a boy or girl. To my daughter, she is a girl. I figure that it makes no difference in Bella’s health or happiness whether my daughter thinks she is a girl or not. lol I am really glad to hear that males bond well too! I am going to start bonding them this Winter.

Wow! That makes sence and I know what I did wrong in sexing “her”. The site says that if you don’t press down firmly enough for the sex organ to come out, a bucks penis can easily look like the tip of a does vagina! I am now 90% sure that Bella is a boy! Thanks for the link Jersey!

OKay, so the 90% just went back down to 50%! The genital in question is very close to the anus and the bald spots are on the mound of the genital area. They All look the same to me! This is driving me nuts! I am going to see if the vet will take a quick look when I take Baxter in for his neuter.

lol ! Just to confuse further, the Does genitals can protrude also. Maybe do a comparison between Baxter and Bella? Or leave it a mystery for the time being. ;o)

I know the doe can poke out too like the male but it is more pointed like a female. I thought that I say testicles but now I think they may have scent glands. I don’t know!!! lol I cannot invade Baxter to compare! He will is too big and too mature and too hormonal! He would definetly make me regret it! I don’t know if he would hump me or bite me lol

I’ve never sexed a rabbit, so I’m really no help other than what the internet says (cheerio=boy, slit=girl). I agree, see if the vet or an experienced vet tech can take a look when you bring Baxter in.

If she is in fact a he, you should be able to get her neutered sooner, so that would have the added benefit of getting them on the road to bonding quicker.

I think instead of trying to guess, have the vet check and confirm. That would be the easiest and most reliable thing to do – the vet should be able to tell the sex at 3 1/2 months.

I found that the testes were near the tail, behind the other parts. The scent glands are more along side.

I called the Vet today and he confirmed that I can bring Bella in next Thursday when I bring Baxter for his neuter.

*Elrohwen, what I am seeing is located right on each side of the genitals not by the tail. I really do think that I am seeing scent glands….they just have those everywhere don’t they! lol Anyway, the Vet said that if she is in fact a he it would be more beneficial for me because of the difference in surgery cost and that it can be done earlier. I don’t know….I am going to have him look but from everyone is telling me…I’ll bet she is a she after all. I was just very surprised to see the little bald spots lol.

I just want to “ditto” this.  Despite my links on sexing rabbits, it was meant to provide clues but I myself wouldn’t be satisfied until I heard it from the vet.  I guess the mystery for you will be solved on Thursday!
