DIY Litter Screen

Hi guys! The BB litter screen has been on pre-order for a while now, so I am thinking of making my own. Has anyone made their own? If so, what was your method and materials?

I have Home Depots and Lowes in my area, but am not sure what material I would be looking for in there (assuming that is where I would look?). When I search for “screens” it does not give me what I am looking for.

I’ve made my own, they aren’t as fancy as the BB ones though (which I’ve also bought, and are awesome). I ended up making my own once our pet sitter accidentally threw away our BB one!

You’ll want to hardware cloth, I believe the grid size is 1/4″ (so it’s smaller than you’re bun’s poops!).

I cut a piece slightly larger than the litter box, then fold the edges under (so that a couple rows are folded under), then fold the corners under. It might take some adjusting to get it to fit your box, so don’t fold the edges completely flat until you are happy with the size. Make sure to use small enough wire cutters to trim any sharp parts really well. It’s really important that there are no sharp edges or pokey wires that could hurt your bun. You should be able to run your hand smoothly over the whole thing and not feel anything sharp.

Also be sure to inspect it regularly when you clean the box. The corners where it’s folded can have wires break and start poking up. Usually you can just trim these down and you will be good to go.

Knitting plastic mesh! I used 7-count, which means 7 squares for every inch. Easy to cut and clean, and no fear of sharp edges. Hay does get stuck some times, so you could get stabbed by a vertically-standing piece of hay though, haha.

I just thought I would mention, the litter box screens are always on pre-order in the Binky Bunny shop. This is because they are custom made for each order depending on the size of your litter box, so they’re not ready to ship. The pre-order status is a way of indicating this. There is more about it in the description of the litter box screen.

I think that knitting mesh looks like it works well

I agree with Dana. Hardware cloth 1/4th inch is what I would use. I think the knitting mesh would be the perfect size, but I’d worry about my rabbits chewing it up since it’s plastic. I also use hardware cloth to protect my baseboards so the buns don’t nibble them. You will need tin snips to cut it. It comes in rolls like wrapping paper and it’ll probably be in the gardening section. I get mine at Tractor Supply Company.
