Our ice maker dispenser in our side by side refrig went out a couple of months ago- and we have just been opening the freezer door and grabbing ice out of the bin.  I finally got around to empyting it all out- cleaning it and made sure it was not a frozen part, etc.  Nope, not such luck.  And since the refrig works perfect, the ice maker works perfect, the water in the door is perfect, it will just not eject ice!  Nothing happened when we pressed the lever- usually you can hear the motor kick on.  I spent a few hours looking online using the model number to try to find out what else to check- and no such luck, it seemed like all the info I found did not fit what was wrong.  But I stumbled across a site where people can ask a repairman questions if you are a premium member, and it is a $5 lifetime fee for premium member.   http://www.applianceblog.com

So I passed the link to hubby and asked him to work on it and see what he found, so he signed up and asked the question- and within hours we had our first suggestion of what to check.  I noticed that we had a response to the thread Chad started- so I followed the instructions and that is indeed what is wrong with our icemake- the plastic pin holding the switch in place was broken.  So for less than $18 (part plus shipping) we can fix the problem ourselves!  Looks simple to replace the plastic “plate” as long as we unplug refrig for a few minutes.

So I thought I would pass the link along to other members here- it saved us money!  If my refrig had quit it would be a different story- but did you ever have something little that was seemed like to might be a DIY if you just knew what to look for???  I did not even know the front plate on the refrig unsnapped until the online repairman said how to do it- they certainly don’t tell you that in the owners manual!

You can search the answers on the forum for free- but nothing fit our exact issue with the icemaker.  And since we are a “premium member” we can always have this resource at our fingertips.

That’s cool. Congrats on your Premium Membership – hehe! I’m a biggy on trying to fix things yourself. Probably repairmans worst nightmare.
For instance, dvd player not working? Get rubber spatula from kitchen and stick in above the tray. Wiggle it round and try make it look like there’s a technique too it. If this fails, tip dvd play upside down a few times then try a disc again. If this fails…well I’m out of tips, but seriously, those methods have worked for me on a number of occasions.

Probably means I would benefit from getting more expert advice from such blogs, so thanks for the link.

A spatula?  I usually just bang on it flip it over and shake and bang on it some more.  If that doesn’t work try the instructions.  Otherwise ask hubby.

Hubby is pretty good at fixing stuff.   Yeah that site great find.  thats so cool
