My bunny has been getting the occasional discharge from his eyes. He seems to be acting the same as always so I’m not sure if this is a problem that I need to go to the vet or not?

Is it a clear discharge or is it gooey and white (or other color)?

Are the eyes red, are the eyelids red and/or swollen?

          Are both eyes affected?

Is there any discharge from the nose and/or excessive sneezing?

If its a clear discharge you can start by rinsing the eyes with saline eyewash for humans. Pat cheeks dry (or dry-ish, rather), repeat rinse the next day and see if that takes care of the problem. Buns can get hay dust etc in their eyes.

Buns can also get plugged-up tearducts. Some buns need their tearducts flushed (by a vet).

If the discharge is gooey and/or the eyes are red, a bacterial infection would be suspected.

The discharge is more gooey and white and coming from both. His eyes aren’t red at all. I have an appointment with the vet for Monday so I’m not really sure what I should do until then.

White discharge suggests something is going on in there. You may need an antibiotic.

You can still start by rinsing with saline. Do one eye at a time and don’t use the same tissue or compress to collect the rinsed out goo with.
