Discharge from eye…Help

My bun, Clover has some sort of discharge coming out of one eye.  It’s clear and once dry it causes the fur around the eye to become crusty. I’ve been keeping it wiped, but it never goes away.  Other than this Clover has been fine, eating and  pooping normally.  Any ideas??  Thanks.

Hi Ksharp, any discharge from a rabbits eye should be seen to straight away. by a vet. However i wouldnt worry too much more times than often it usually represents a bacterial infection such as Pasteurella, Bordetella, or Staphylococcus which can easily be treated by antibiotics such as baytril. If left for a long time however the infection can spread to the jaw and other parts of the face.

Your doing the right thing by keeping the area clean. Hope clover gets better soon x

I would agree with tallullu, and that you should take Clover to the vet. If treated early, it is more likely to respond to the antibiotics.

Just wondering how this turned out, did you take him to the vet and what was the result?

Sable had a gooey eye the other day but it seemed to dry up and he looked fine the next morning.  Then last night I noticed a little  bit of wetness again after several days of it being okay so I’m curious about Clover’s situation.

Things have not turned out well at all. Ironically as we were in the treatment room waiting on the vet I felt a lump on her lower jaw. Turns out to be an abcess; which most of us know isn’t a good thing. She sent us home with some medicine and said she would talk with a specialist about our situation. We’ll see what he says, but I’m afraid in the end we may have to free her of her suffering. According to the vet this is not uncommon in smaller breed rabbits with blunt type faces. Many years ago I had another rabbit named Flopsy, who unfortunately passed away due to a similar situation. He was initially misdiagnosed as having pasturella. He went through three surgeries and lots of medication. The vet finally decided it was an abcess and sent us home, supposedly with a healthy pet. Poor Flopsy died a few days later. It broke my heart. Now it’s breaking again. Clover is a tough little bunny, having come through a hysterectomy due to a cancerous mass in her stomach. I just hate to think I’m going to lose her after such a rough time.

Ah, poor thing.  I can’t offer much other than understanding and best wishes.  I hope things get better for her.

I would recommend getting her into the best rabbit expert vet you can find in your area for a second opinion. My rabbit’s life was saved as a result of seeing an exotics specialist.

OH, I’m so sorry!  I know that just hurts your heart!   I’ve been through the whole jaw abscess thing with Rucy.  The first one she had before i adopted her.  The second one returned after two years, and the third one was because the root from the tooth that was removed was still growing.  So my rabbit savvy vet teamed up with a vet who specialized in dental issues.  Together, they did the ‘final"  surgery, (cross my fingers) and Rucy’s has been free of the abscess for over a year.   She’s happy and much more calm, so I know she’s pain free.  She does have an eye that drains due to the fact that the scar tissue from the surgeries has blocked her tear duct, but Jack usually keeps her eye clean and dry. 

I also advise you to find a rabbit savvy vet who has experience in jaw abscesses.

Our first bunny, Missy had major dental problems but she was such a brave little girl.  We did all we could for her and our vet was great.   She had several abcesses over the last 3 years, they treated them as they occured, and each time it was ok. There are things they can do xxx  I would strongly suggest getting x-rays taken too if possible, this is the one thing my vet didn’t do until after the first 2 abcesses.

It was a huge decision when we agreed to have her insisors removed (we had to weigh up the frequency of surgery for filing down etc and the stress it caused against how well she would cope with eating without them – our vet felt that she would be fine) and she eat almost the same, we just had to make sure we cut things up into little chunks.

In the end it wasn’t an abcess that was the problem, it was an upper canine root which was growing upwards… it was too close to the eye for them to do surgery easily and before we could make the decision to risk surgery and possibly lose her eye, she had two massive seizures.  It was awful.  It broke our hearts, it truly did, i’m just glad we did all that we could for her xxx

Oh KSharp, I so hope Clover is feeling better.  Sable’s eye has dried up, thank goodness.  He has seemed fine for the past few days.

Clover is doing okay for the most part. She gets medicine every day and I think the swelling is down a bit. She’s still eating and hopping around like normal which is a good sign. On Monday she goes to a specialist, who has had some success with such cases. My husband doesn’t totally agree with me because of all we went through with Flopsy. But I have to give her a chance and hope for the best. So, please think good thoughts for Clover.

Clover had her appointment today. The specialist did not see anything too unsual in her X-Rays. He did say her teeth were very uneven though. He went in and evened them out the best he could and also drained the abcess. He saved some of the fluid to check for pasterulla. Follow up for her at this point consists of antibiotic injections every three days for the next two weeks. She seems to be doing okay and I’m keeping Toby away for now so she can rest after her hard day. I’m hopeful, but also afraid to get my hopes up too high.

Clover is doing well. The injections are actually being given every other day. Her incision was opened on Saturday and the vet didn’t see any signs of infection. Our vet has been on vacation and today was our first visit with her since Clover went to the specialist. She’s really taken good care of Clover and even told her today that she loved her. All in all she is very pleased with what she’s seeing. So for now, we’ll continue treatment for a few more weeks and hope it doesn’t come back. On a non rabbit related subject, I ask that you all think some good thoughts for a six year old basset/beagle mix named Buddy. My sweet boy had a seizure last night as he lay in bed. It was very scary and I thought he was going to die right there in front of me. We are currently awaiting lab results. When it rains it pours.

Edited!  I asked how Clover was doing, only to find the updated post of how she was doing.

I’m glad to hear good news about Clover, but am sad to hear about Buddy.   I hope that everything will be okay, and I am sending good healthy vibes both both bunny and dog!

Clover is doing well. She’s still getting penicillin injections regularly. Tuesday she goes in for a recheck and hopefully the specialist will have good news for us. And thankfully Buddy hasn’t had anymore seizures.

He didn’t see anything abnormal other than the uneven teeth. He reccomended continuing with the penicillin once a week for the next couple of months. And then just stopping and observing. He also said her bite should be checked every three months or so. Hopefully she will continue to do well.

it was surprisingly easy. It was a mammoth flight but luckily i have been several times before so i was expecting it. Weather wise its amazing the only hard part was leaving my two bunnies behind. but they are in safe hands and I know they will be well looked after. There was just no way i could have gotten them over other than hiring a private jet.
