Disabled bun not using litterbox

Hi there my rabbit is currently disabled with cancer he can’t realy move around all that much so that is why I have a litterbox that is handicap accessible for him. Sometimes he does have accidents outside his litterbox. I went away for 2 nites and had a friend who is very experienced with rabbits take care of him while I was away. I noticed when I came home from being away that he didn’t even use the litterbox at all. I put a towel on the bottom of his cage with a soft rug underneath it. That was covered with poop and pee. I am wondering what other alternative I could use since he didn’t use the litterbox or did he not use it because I was away? thanks

Try the sheepskin. It should wick the wet away from his body and you can wash it. He may not be able at this point to even use a litterbox no matter what you try.

There is a company called Palace Pets and they have very nice “beds” that can work – they are pretty good. You can also look in the dog section at the crates and they have something that you can use for fleece as well.

I have a rabbit who has arthritis and he’s terrible with his litter box – he sometimes gets in it but I’m not hoping at this point he will ever be even 10% at using his box but since he’s not disabled like some of my past rabbits I use a few washable rugs with plastic backing and wash weekly and air dry.

No matter what you try, you are going to be challenged and possibly frustrated because you feel like you just cannot keep them fresh and clean but try not to get too frustrated if you can…I know sometimes I feel upset because I don’t feel like I’m giving the absolute best care but I know I’m doing the best I can.

Thank you I do feel like that all the time. I just feel he needs a litter box or a tray of some sort. I do have a sheepskin rug underneath his towel that is on the bottom of his cage. I do change the towel daily. thanks for your help

I used the Palace Pet Beds also for Spockie. They are kind of like carpet samples that are designed to wick away the moisture. You throw them in the washing machine, and can cut them to any size you need, so it can be convenient to have one large one cut down to make two or more a day that you can change out. That’s what I needed to do.

Here is the link to the House Rabbit Society’s page on disabled bunnies  http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-12/disabled-litter.html.  I tried several different options that they suggested.  The sea grass mat works best for me, but probably won’t work for you if your bunny is dragging his back legs.  He might be getting to the point where it’s just too hard for him to use a litterbox. I would get several mats and just be prepared to change them a lot.

Disabled rabbit group on yahoo is also a wonderful group to join-any disability you can name, there are people who’ve been through it and had come up with creative solutions-a great support.

I’m really sorry to hear about your bun He’s lucky to have someone who will work so hard to look after him.
