        Hi,

So I recently expanded the buns pens more so they take up my whole living room which means they have more wood floor to walk on. I have always kept fleece right outside the litter box to soak up any pee on their feet but the past couple of days, the floor has been sticky and gross. I cleaned it and it was all yellow. Now I am thinking I never noticed this before because they mainly just had fleece in their pens and it would have soaked up the pee on their feet. I don’t mind cleaning every couple of days because they make their pens messy as it is but I don’t want to track the pee everywhere else in my house.

So how do free-roam buns not make the floor caked in pee from their feet and how does your couch not smell like pee from them? I have pine pellets and then a grate and aspen shavings on top and I clean their litter box every day.

        Thanks in advance!

I’m just wondering how their feet can even get yucky from all those layers of “protection”. My litter box has a grate and I put wood pellets underneath – the only time my bunny has pee on his feet is when he pees outside of his box and proceeds to step on it. Are your buns peeing in the box 90 if not 100% of the time?

It could also be due to the fact that their space has been expanded and they feel the need to mark, hence they are peeing somewhere on the floor (check the corners!) and leaving stains for you to discover later on lol.

It must be the aspen or something but I am so lost on what to do. What kind of grate do you have? I know the pairs have been making their territory so I’m not surprised the floor is dirty right now but yeah, they 99.9% of the time pee in the litter box.
The corners are always the nastiest to clean haha, it takes like 5 times of wiping to get it clean.

Is there any specific reason why you put the aspen shavings on top?

Caramel my new zeland is a 9 pounder and her hocks get very sore with just the grate so that is why I do the shavings so it gives some cushion because that paper bedding doesn’t help her hocks or help control the odor. Do you know where I can find a grate like yours but like 5 times the size? I might try and go to the hardware store and see if they have a grate similar to yours big way bigger so it can hold her and not break haha.

For Wick’s I use a plastic mesh canvas. You can get them pretty large and if anything, zip tie multiple together.

See the photo album in My Profile for how it looks. You’ll also find some pictures on Wick’s Instagram.

Wick, that is a great idea! I will go buy some and hopefully it works. Thank you!
