I am in the process of moving. My bedroom is a mess to say the least. The floor doesn’t even exist at the moment.

Dini has never been one to really get into things unless food is involved. And he has certainly never been able to reach my desk. But he isn’t named after Houdini for nothing.

Friday night around 2am I went into my bedroom (it is attached to the rabbit room) to all of my stuff that is normally on my desk laying in the floor and Dini was on my desk. Now Dini was supposed to be securely jailed behind a very high gate in the rabbit room. I noticed he was chewing on something and picked him up. Under him was a bottle of medication I had to take two weeks ago for a back injury that was on the shelf above the desk. How he managed to get the bottle I have no clue because the shelf is high. But I suspect he knew the treats were on that shelf and somehow managed to get up there. He had eaten 2 of the pills inside. These are dangerous for people to take over one let alone a rabbit eating two.

There is no longer an emergency vet that sees rabbits in my area. They flat out told me if you bring him here we will turn you away we do not treat rabbits and do not have a vet that knows about rabbits. To say I was freaking out was an understatement. So I called the vet that I took Enki to and was told until I could get him to a vet even if it is my dog vet to keep him awake (the medication is known to slow your heart rate) keep him hydrated and make sure he is eating. So I literally sat up all night keeping him awake and feeding him water and anything he would eat. He didn’t seem affected at all in the least. He was a tiny bit slower than normal but if I didn’t know what to look for I wouldn’t have noticed.

Sunday morning I made the 2 hour trek to the vet. She ran a bagillion tests and gave him so much fluids I am shocked he didn’t blow up like a balloon. Nothing was found except his heart rate was a little bit slow. They gave him something to counteract the medication (I can’t remember what) and put him on oxygen. I went to work and called every chance I got to check on him. He was causing a lot of trouble instead of being sick. He peed on two vets and a tech. He attempted to chew the oxygen mask even though it was wrapped around his head. When a tech when to draw more blood he bit her three times. And he threw the veggie bowl against the holding cage he was in before leaving a trail of poops around the cage.

I brought him home after work. He has been doing fine. I am still keeping an eye on him since I know some medications can cause problems later down the line.

All medication whether it is human, dog, cat, rabbit, reptile, etc is now in another room where master escape artist Dini has no access to.

Hmm, sounds like he didn’t appreciate the “overly cautious” treatment he was getting from the vet. He probably thought he was just fine and didn’t know what all the fuss was about. Are you sure he actually devoured 2 whole pills? Perhaps he didn’t ingest as much as you originally thought and the water you gave him overnight diluted what was in his system. Either way, I’m glad to hear he is doing okay. When Wooly was “high” on adhesive fumes, I was so worried about him. So I know how that feels. =)

Good Lord, Sonn, you are having a time of it lately, aren’t you? ((((((((Hugs))))))))
Our corgi cross dog, Ebon, got hold of one of my husband’s nasal sprays last summer and ran around the room with it, she didn’t bite into it until he tried to get her to drop it. Off to the ER vet we raced, (30 miles away), and they kept her overnight watching her and treating her with some kind of epinephrine type drug to keep her heart going. It was unlikely she got much out of the bottle, but the stuff is so virulent that you can’t take any chances. She recovered just fine but since it is my daughter’s dog, you can imagine how angry she was that he’d got so careless.
Remember that bunnies pass meds through their system rapidly, so they can handle higher doses of the same drug than most mammals can. But yeah I can imagine what a nightmare this was.
I hope he completely recovers….and I hope you do too!

Oh my goodness how scary!!! I’m glad it turned out well though.

I have to say I lol’d at how much trouble Dini was at the vet, and now I’m wondering if that’s the real reason most vets don’t treat rabbits lol

I am almost certain he ate both pills unless one got lost in the mountain of packing boxes behind the bed.

The vet told me the same thing about their bodies processing medication faster than humans. I had a similar situation when my parents kept one of my dogs while I was away. I was livid. But he had to have his stomach pumped because the meds they gave him to make him vomit didn’t work.

Dini is a pain in the butt when he goes to the vet. He is all sweet and cuddly until they take him out of the exam room. Then he turns into a nightmare. Lol.

He is still doing fine thankfully.

OMG, that is terrifying!!! Soooo glad to hear Dini is ok. Sounds like he’s quite a spunky fellow and really let the vets know how he felt about being kept against his will! Haha

He’s completely fine thankfully! He’s a sneaky little butt. He’s definitely a problem bun when he wants to be.

I couldn’t find him anywhere in the bunny room yesterday and looked over and he was hidden inside the giant box of hay that is 6ft off of the floor! He was just chewing away like it was an everyday thing. Enki and Banji like their life low to the ground but Dini seems to like being as high as possible.

                              Teh heh!

If he was a kid, he’d be the one on the roof in his superman costume right? Lol

OMG! Talk about stress. So glad to hear the little guy is doing okay. He is definitely named well!

It made me laugh to think about him at the vet because it reminded me of the first vet visit Zinga had: the vet put the stethoscope on her nose (not directly on the nose but above it… you know what I mean!) and she kept flinging it off in her sassy pants way. She also bit the vet tech who was holding her. Hee hee. She doesn’t even like it when I pet her nose there unless she’s got her eyes closed or thinks that its Bunneh grooming her.

Dini has been an escape artist since he was handed to me. Lol.

I think the only rabbit I have had that learned to love the vet (lots of treats) is Pacey. The rest are either so scared they start screaming or just bite bite bite. Enki went to the vet I took Dini to not long ago and at first he was calm and cool and just chilling on the table. The second the vet touched him he let out a scream like she had killed him. It was pretty funny after the fact. But during I think I had mini heart attack. Banji has a delayed reaction since he doesn’t see very well. At first he doesn’t know what is going on so he is rather calm. Then the vet picks him up and I think he thinks it is me because he automatically goes for the hand for a treat (I give him a treat whenever I have to pick him up). And once he realizes it isn’t me it is all teeth and claws.
