Diggy Box Fail

I recently made a diggy box for Olaf out of a shipping box and shredded crinkle-cut kraft paper (the kind you use for gift baskets and filler). The paper was dye-free and natural. He loved it! He doesn’t ingest paper but loves to nibble on each strand, moving it back and forth in his teeth like a typewriter, and pushes the pile around to his liking.

Sadly, he also decided to start using it as a litter box. He’s always been so good about only going in his cage box but I spotted the problem this morning. At first I thought they were just a few marking droppings but the paper was also wet.

He was so happy with himself in there, I feel badly taking it away, but I can’t establish bad habits either. I’m thinking of either trying with a new box and a thinner layer of paper (so it isn’t as plush) or trying a different kind of substrate. I’m trying to avoid dirt and sand in my house so we’ll see!

That’s the only trouble with diggy boxes, I don’t see how I would ever control their desire to soil it

Yes! So frustrating. But thank you, he really was delighted. I’m thinking less substrate and possibly only bring it out once in a while. It didn’t start happening until he got settled and was spending 20 minutes at a time digging around. Maybe if it feels “new” all the time he won’t get as… comfy. ;]

I use a different filler that Georgie wouldn’t soil

I cut paper towel rolls into 1cm rings and fill the box with rings. Each one was nibbled and tossed and she never peed or pooped inside the diggy box when we used rings.

Hopefully it could work for Olaf too

pinknfwuffy, that is the number one reason why I can’t give mine diggy boxes of paper. :/ I can’t even put a seagrass mat on the floor without it becoming a toilet. 

For Olaf, you could try putting a box up the other way, so there is no cardboad on the floor, then stuff it full of the shredded paper and have some access holes for him to excavate the box.

I was afraid of the same thing, so the wookie’s IKEA box diggy fortress is filled with balls of crumpled up packing paper. A year and more, and no toileting inside. Just lots of vigorous engineering.

I have no useful tips, Bam would never bother to dig, it’s after all a demanding physical task and Bam doesn’t do those. I just want to say that Olaf looks so amazingly cute in that box ?

My one and only attempt at a Diggy Box was the same. Bindi was like “ooh, thanks for the giant, cushy toilet!!!”.
