We recently moved my rabbit’s cage to another room. Not long after she started digging her litter out to the rest of her cage. She has a cage about 4ft long & about 8-10in is an add-on from the brand that I turned into a litter box. I use shredded news paper & the ocassional care fresh paper bedding. She’s not popping or peeing outside of the litter box area, she continues to use the litter box even after digging all the paper out so that she is going on the bare cage floor. I tried changing her litter to hemp & rabbit safe wood shavings but she still does this. I’ve even continuously put the paper back in the litter area. I don’t know what more to do?

Lots of buns like to dig in their litter box. It helps to add a litter box screen (there are some sold on this site). I know some others have gotten creative and used other materials for theirs (I think Wick uses something meant for knitting, but I can’t recall what it is). Some people use mats used for wire bottom bunny cages that are meant to be easier on their feet.

I recently switched to a litter box that is so big it doesn’t matter if they dig in it (it’s a concrete mixing tub from the hardware store), as the bedding still stays in the box. Digging is an instinct for them, so I like them to be able to dig around if they want to.
