        Hi all,

I almost never do forums, but I’m stumped by this behaviour and hoping for some help/opinions. I have a 1.5 yr old neutered male dutch rabbit. His name is Voldemort, whoever had him before I adopted him named him that and I found it so hilarious that I kept it. Thats not really important I just find it fun to share that tidbit. Anyway, I’ve had him about 4 months now, and in the last two weeks he has started digging out his litterbox. I have him in about a 2ftx4ft dormer next to where my bed is, tile floor, baby gate. thats his “cage”. he is allowed out of his cage typically for several hours a day. in the back of it is a big plastic tub in which i put his hay, food dish and salad dish. My routine is to scoop the box everyday, and i clean it completely basically every 3rd of 4th. I use kiln dried pine (ive noticed that its a bit controversial but i have yet to find paper or aspen thats anywhere near as affordable for me). I thought about territorial behavior but the only animals anywhere near his area are a dog and two cats and they never bother him and arent allowed in his little room so I doubt thats it. Any advice is appreciated. it used to be so easy to keep his room clean now I have a monumental mess nearly every day. I just want to make my routine easier and more importantly make sure he’s not stressed. Sorry for the length of this and thanks.

Rabbits digging at places they enjoy to lounge or sit in for long periods of time is quite common. Check out Wick: http://www.instagram.com/p/BgKWlu9BQys/?taken-by=wick_theboogeyman

There won’t really be a way to confirm, but a lot of people think it’s because the rabbit is creating a nice nook or “scrape” for themselves. It feels more secure that way.

I advise a litter screen on top of the litter to prevent the digging! To note, Wick never used to dig before. He only recently decided he likes clawing the places he’s about to pee/lounge on pretty recently.
