Digging box for bunnies

Hi everyone, 

Recently I have been thinking about creating a digging box for my buns, I have two that love a good dig. I have tried shredded newspaper in a box, they loved it, but peed all through it, making it a not very hygienic digging box. I have read about some other ideas such as sand, dirt and other things, both with their pros and cons. Ideally I would like there digging box to be as clean as possible and did read somewhere about making a digging box out of small river pebbles, perfect for digging. I’m writing on here to see other’s opinions about this and if it is a safe/acceptable bunny toy! Also, if anyone has any other ideas for clean(ish) digging box ideas for indoors bunnies, send them my way, your help would be absolutely wonderful Also, just a quick side question, what are people use for a bed for their bunnies? (comfy mat, fabric igloo, pillow etc) please send photos if you can as I would love to see them

You could try old rags in a box. Or maybe carpet remnants if they don’t try to ingest it. Mine likes to ruffle blankets around and that seems like the same idea. I use a fleece blanket and towel for my buns bed. I’ve seen people use soft dog beds and crate pads for beds too. Just depends on what your bun prefers.

So far our buns’ favorite toys are cardboard boxes.  We have several of them, mostly under the dining room table.  We line them with newspaper and cover the paper with oat hay.  They are multi function boxes, oat chomping boxes, digging boxes to search for more oats and to dig up the newspaper for chewing/tearing, and also for eating the cardboard. They love to jump in and can keep themselves quite busy. They sometimes make a soft cooing sound as they go about all of this, so I think they are really pleased with the activity.  Tearing and shredding the cardboard makes a lot of noise.  I think they like the noise.  One of the boxes sits next to a filing cabinet and one of them, when she jumps in the box, she jumps firstly against the filing cabinet making a big boom, and falls down into the box.

I actually just made a digging box for my bunny, Happy. I decided it might be more fun if I gave her a variety of things in it. I lined it with a bunch of paper, partly because there’s a small opening in the bottom of the box I used. Then I layered in some old dish towels, (Happy has never chewed on towels or blankets) a few pieces of plain white tissue, for the fun crinkle sounds it makes when she digs, and then I put a thin layer of plain white carefresh bedding over 2/3, and some hay over the other 1/3. I hid a few treats throughout the layers. At first, she didn’t seem to understand the box was for her, but I kept calling her to it, and showing her a treat, and putting the treat in the box. Today, she has gone into the box several times to dig and scrounge for treats. She hasn’t made any mess with it, or confused it for a litter box yet. I hope she will keep using it so nicely.
